2012-2013 Artist Series at Wheaton College: Passionate, Powerful Performances

Tickets are available for performances presented by the Artist Series at Wheaton College.

Artist Series General Manager Dr. Tony Payne says the 2012-2013 performance season offers ticketholders new opportunities to experience the arts.

“Whether it’s the passionate embrace of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique Symphony or the suspension of a dancer in mid-air, people want to see, to hear, even to touch the arts,” Payne says. “This season features a series of emerging artists who inspire us with their technical achievement, their love of performing, their skills in communication, and their deep understanding of the music and traditions that are closest to our hearts.”

The season begins with performances by the Cashore Marionettes. These special family events will take place in Barrows Auditorium September 21at 7:30 p.m. and September 22 at 4 p.m. Cashore will perform its "Life In Motion" program Friday, and its "Simple Gifts" program Saturday.

Piano duo Anderson & Roe takes the stage September 28 to deliver a vibrant classical concert. Billed as the “Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of the piano,” Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Roe are known for joyful, energetic performances and technical expertise.

Violinist Caroline Goulding and the Camerata Chicago chamber orchestra will perform compositions by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and other classical composers November 17.

At 19, Goulding has already performed as a soloist with some of North America’s premier orchestras. Camerata Chicago, founded in 2003, has established itself as one of the finest chamber orchestras on the world stage under the leadership of founder and director Drostan Hall.

“This is no fledgling orchestra,” Payne says. “Drostan Hall and Camerata Chicago have proven that it is possible to create a first-rate orchestra out of a dream. Having Goulding join them will provide our guests with an unforgettable experience.”

February 9, the critically acclaimed Hubbard Street 2 Dance Company will perform with the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra. The performance will be the company’s first appearance at Edman Memorial Chapel.

“We have been waiting a long time to present one of the great Chicago dance companies,” Payne says. “When Hubbard Street 2 Dance Company learned of the possibility of a symphonic collaboration with the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra, they were highly motivated to make their debut on our series.”

The China National Symphony Orchestra will present selections from its repertoire of classical, romantic, modern, and contemporary orchestral works by Western and Asian composers February 21.

March 22, the Harlem Quartet will perform classical compositions by Schubert and Mozart, in addition to jazz compositions by Chick Corea and Billy Strayhorn.

“With credentials from the finest schools, mature classical chops, and a repertoire that incorporates the swagger of American jazz, Harlem is the total package,” Payne says.

The series concludes May 4 with a genre-shattering performance by The Old Town School of Folk Music On the Road. This combination of classical chamber music and gritty Chicago blues features Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues, banjo virtuoso Michael Miles, and vocal trio The Sons of the Never Wrong.

The Cashore Marionettes performance will take place in Barrows Auditorium, located in the east wing of the Billy Graham Center at 500 College Avenue in Wheaton; general admission tickets are $15. All other concerts will take place in Edman Memorial Chapel, located on the northeast corner of Washington and Franklin streets in Wheaton.
