Raymond Winters Pleads Guilty to Attempted Armed Robbery

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Wednesday that Raymond Winters, 44, formerly of Chicago, entered a plea of guilty to Attempted Armed Robbery, a Class 1 Felony, in connection with the 1999 shooting death of then 32-year-old Aldis Tucker in Wheaton. Winters entered his plea in front of Judge George Bakalis, who sentenced Winters to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. 

On July 28, 1999, armed with a handgun, Winters went to Tucker’s home in Wheaton with the intention of robbing him. Once there, Winters shot Tucker several times including once at close range in his face. Winters then fled the scene. The case went cold for approximately ten years until a jailhouse informant told authorities that he heard Winters discussing the crime while serving time in prison on an unrelated vehicular hijacking case, according to a press release from the State's Attorney's Office Wednesday. Winters was indicted on murder charges on April 28, 2009, the same day he was scheduled to be released from prison on the vehicular hijacking charges.

“Today, Raymond Winters’ past finally caught up with him,” Berlin wrote. “Justice has been served and Mr. Winters will now pay the price for his role in the death of Aldis Tucker. In exchange for a sentence of 25 years behind bars, Mr. Winters has agreed to fully and truthfully cooperate with authorities into other ongoing investigations in both DuPage and Cook Counties. I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Joe Ruggiero, Bernie Murray and Joe Lindt for their outstanding efforts in ensuring that Raymond Winters was held accountable for his actions.  I would also like to thank the men and women of the Wheaton Police Department and all the other agencies involved for their tireless efforts in seeking justice for Aldis Tucker.”
