Basement Fire Reported at Downtown Wheaton Business Tuesday

The blaze caused fire and water damage to the building's basement. Here are more details.

The building of a downtown Wheaton business remains uninhabitable following a Tuesday night fire, officials said.

The fire occurred at DuPage Orthodontics on the 300 block of South West Street. The Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 7:30 p.m., according to a press release.

Fire crews found that a fire in the building's basement area was extinguished by several fire sprinkler heads. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

"The building had extensive smoke conditions throughout all areas," the release said. "Fire and water damage were confined to the basement."

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined and damage estimates are unavailable at this time. The Wheaton Fire Department and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Taskforce conducted a fire investigation.

The Wheaton Police Department, fire departments from nearby towns and the City of Wheaton Building Department also responded to the scene.

Officials said the building will be uninhabitable until repairs are completed.
