Poetry Reading and Lecture by David Ferry

The English Department at Wheaton College hosts a 4 p.m. lecture and 7:30 p.m. poetry reading by renowned translator and American poet David Ferry on Tuesday, October 1.

In the 4 p.m. lecture, titled "Experiencing Translation,” Ferry will talk about how his career as translator of classical literature relates to his work as a poet. His translations include some of the world's major works of poetry and are known for their fluency and grace.

In addition to his translations, Ferry is also a prize-winning poet and author of six books of poems. In 2011, he was awarded the $100,000 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for lifetime achievement.

At 7:30 p.m. Ferry will read from his most recent books of poetry including On This Side of the River: Selected Poems (Waywiser Press, 2012), and Bewilderment: New Poems and Translations (University Of Chicago Press, 2012), which won the National Book Award for Poetry. Ferry is professor emeritus of English at Wellesley College.
