ReplyHere's a suggestion for those who live near the field. If the district does, indeed, install lights, there are devices called blinds on your windows. Draw the blinds and get a life!

ReplyAll these new projects certainly makes me feel good about that 85 percent hike in tolls we'll be getting socked with on Jan. 1. Thank you, Illinois Tollway!

ReplyNone of the above. I've learned over the years not to make New Year's resolutions because I never keep them.

ReplyAmen Jeff! If I had a dollar for every time I've passed up a driver blabbing on his/her cell phone, I could have retired years ago. I used to have a bumper sticker that said, "Hang up and drive!" My guess is that the cell phone users were too busy yapping to ever notice that bumper sticker.

ReplyI'm guessing none of the Tollway Board members who voted for the increase will be at any of the Tollway Oases to help serve coffee. It's probably not part of their attend-one-meeting-per-month-for-$31K-per-year job description.

On the article Patch Poll: Was the Iraqi War Worth It?

ReplyI found this quote from none other than Dick Cheney, who was Secretary of Defense under the first President Bush. Remember after the 1991 Gulf War, the U.S. did have an opportunity to go into Iraq after Saddam Hussein, but George H.W. Bush decided against it ... and ironically, Cheney supported his decision. Here's Cheney's quote: "I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him (Saddam) from Kuwait, but also when the President made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq." Even though I think the world is a better place without Saddam, it turns out Bush 41's reasoning couldn't have been more prophetic.

ReplyInitially, I supported going into Iraq. But when no WMDs were found, my support for the war began to erode--not for the troops, but I began to question why we went into Iraq in the first place. Now that we've officially pulled out, I can only hope the government of Iraq, with its delicate power-sharing arrangement between the Shi'ites, Kurds and Sunnis, will somehow be able to come together and form a stable democracy. It would be sad if they don't, given the sacrifices of our brave troops over the years. Even though, in retrospect, we shouldn't have gone into Iraq, forcing Saddam Hussein out of power was the war's most positive development. As bad as Libya's Gaddafi was, and Syria's Assad is, Saddam -- considered one of the 20th century's most brutal dictators -- was far worse. Saddam idolized Josef Stalin, slaughtered hundreds of thousands of his own people and started two wars (the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and the Gulf War in 1990). I commend our troops for ousting Saddam and for doing their best to help the Iraqi people. They are heroes.

@Cecilia ... Thanks for the reminder. Almost forgot about those sacred, precious Holy Grail-like property values being, as you put it, "theatened." (Oh, the hardships you bear!) If I had the financial means, I'd consider myself so blessed and fortunate to own a home in such a nice area that the last thing I'd do is bellyache about lights from an athletic field shining in my window at night or hearing cheering crowds at an athletic event.
