Nancy Navarro was elected to represent District 4 on the Montgomery County Council in a special election on May 19, 2009 and re-elected in the general election on November 4, 2010. Since December 2010, she has chaired the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Committee and serves on the Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee. In November 2011 she was elected by acclamation by her colleagues as Vice President of the Montgomery County Council. <br><br>Prior to her election to the Council, Ms. Navarro served on the Montgomery County Board of Education, where she was twice elected President (2006 and 2008).<br><br>Before entering public life, Ms. Navarro co-founded a non-profit, community-based organization whose mission was to assist the economic and educational development of Latino and other immigrant communities. School readiness, healthy family development, and academic achievement were primary goals of the organization.<br><br>She is the recipient of various awards, including the 2009 Maryland&#39;s Top 100 Women Award and the Mid-Atlantic Hispanic Chamber of Commerce&#39;s 2010 Elected Local Government Official of the Year Award, among other recognitions. This year, Councilmember Navarro was appointed by President Obama to the “White House Initiative on educational Excellence for Hispanics,” along with singer and education activist Shakira.<br><br>Ms. Navarro is a graduate of the University of Missouri—Columbia. She is also a graduate of IMPACT Silver Spring 2001 Leadership Program and Leadership Montgomery Class of 2009. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She resides in the area of Colesville with her husband, Reginald, and two daughters. Her oldest is an MCPS graduate attending Howard University and her youngest is an MCPS ninth grader.
