Consultants from Design Workshop present three "festival street" ideas for downtown Wheaton in strategic plan open house.
Consultants from Design Workshop last week presented ideas for downtown Wheaton as they work with city officials to establish a strategic plan for the area. Included in the presentation were mockups of possible "festival streets" that would be the destination site for major events such as the Taste of Wheaton, including Front Street, Hale Street, Karlskoga Avenue and Liberty Drive. On Hale Street, Design Workshop presented a design that would include "Tivoli-style" string lights with cable supports between street light poles, angled on-street parking areas, portable outdoor dining areas with perimeter planters and moveable decks, a planter area and a permeable paver system to accommodate and transport excess storm water run-off. The …

Community can hear presentation of ideas for downtown Wheaton Thursday, Feb. 28.

The project team analyzed a number of factors, including traffic, infrastructure and the local market, to assist the City Council in reaching a consensus “vision” for the downtown’s future, and presented findings at a Jan. 28 planning session. City consultants present "vision" for downtown Wheaton plan that includes leveraging public improvements to elevate the area in the suburban market and pursuing opportunities for new development south of the train tracks.
City consultants shared on Monday a "vision" for downtown Wheaton that focuses on leveraging public improvements to elevate it in the suburban market and pursuing new development south of the train tracks. Downtown Wheaton is already in good shape, Design Workshop Associate Britt Palmberg told City Council. All the city really needs to do is "polish the apple." Palmberg presented findings to the council from evaluations of the city's traffic, public input and infrastructure, and a market study of downtown Wheaton that helped them form their proposed vision. The vision includes recommendations to pursue development south of the Metra tracks in keeping with the scale of existing development, prioritize short-term and long-term improvements …

A market study on downtown Wheaton looks at neighboring downtowns to provide "lessons learned" as the city works on its strategic vision.
Wheaton City Council next week will review community input, survey results, reports on traffic and infrastructure and the market study with consultants from Design Workshop as it works to create strategic and streetscape plans for downtown Wheaton. The 105-page market study of downtown Wheaton incorporated local and regional market conditions, trends impacting suburban downtowns, comparable downtown profiles and development recommendations and conclusions. According to the report, population and income are the factors impacting retail demand. The study says that because populations are not expected to grow in the next few decades and incomes may only grow modestly at a rate above inflation, retail demand would not normally grow on its …

1. Stores need to be open on Sunday and beyond 10-5. It's a ghost town. As a family, we spend plenty of money in towns that are open for business. 2. There's no parking for employees all up and down Front, Hale and Main. The time limits on spaces cause employees to move their cars every few hours to avoid a ticket. 3. Make the parking space between Hale and Main a multi-story (>3) parking lot, …   more ›
