What is it About Wheaton Football?

Why is football so big in Wheaton? Heritage, committed coaches, strong youth programs and powerhouse high school programs, coaches say.

The Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South teams on Friday will meet for their annual cross-town matchup. North has beaten South once since 1988 (that win was in 2002), but has been a powerhouse this season that will be tough to stop, Soutch coach Ron Muhitch said. Their 7-1 record has them seeded second in the Class 7A playoffs. To continue their run of playoff appearances since 2002, the Tigers need to win Friday. Before 2002, the team made every playoffs since 1988. Wheaton high schools have been the starting points of football greats for generations, starting with a pioneer of the sport, Pro Football Hall of Famer Harold (Red) Grange. Jim Juriga, a former guard for the Denver Broncos who started in Super Bowl XXIIV, said in a 1991…

Joe D Very informative Scott M, I watched that 1981 State Championship team of Wheaton North, and they are arguably the best team ever to play in Wheatons History, and I would add Jim Juriga was the most decorated football player to come from Wheaton with the exception of Red Grange.   more ›

North-South Game a Must-Win for Tigers

The Wheaton North Falcons and Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers play in the annual cross-town football game Friday, Oct. 19 at Wheaton North High School. The Tigers need to win the game in order to go to the Class 7A playoffs.

The Wheaton North Falcons and Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers will face each other Friday for their last game of the regular season. The Falcons (7-1, 5-1) have a secure spot as the No. 2 seed in the Class 7A playoffs and are gearing up for the game after suffering their first loss to Glenbard North last week. The Tigers (4-4, 4-1) need the win to make the playoffs. Losing would make 2012 the first year the Tigers have not made the playoffs since 2002, the same year the Falcons last beat the Tigers. “We’re fighting for our playoff life here. To get in, we know we’ve got to beat them,” said Wheaton Warrenville South Coach Ron Muhitch. “We know they (Falcons) had a tough game last week. I’m sure they’re going to bounce back and be ready.” …

Football: Wheaton North's Peltz, Thorson Key to Victory Over Naperville North

Wheaton North 21, Naperville North 7: The dynamic wide receiver and quarterback duo of John Peltz and Clayton Thorson powered the Falcons to a big victory Friday night in Naperville.

Breaking It Down: John Peltz to Clayton Thorson or Thorson to Peltz, either way, the duo found a way to make it work in Wheaton North's 21-7 football victory over Naperville North on Friday night. Peltz and Thorson flip-flopped between playing quarterback and wide receiver throughout the game, with each finding the other to be his favorite target. Both threw the other a touchdown, with Thorson finding Peltz first in the second quarter and Peltz returning the favor to open the third quarter. The duo's second touchdown made it 14-0 early in the second half. Naperville North didn't quit, though, and pulled to within two scores midway through the fourth quarter, before Huskies' quarterback Johnny Brown was stripped at the Falcons' 10, …
