City to Condemn More Than 100 Fireplaces

Homeowners face fireplace condemnation after faulty installation 30 years ago results in fires.

The City of Wheaton will condemn more than 100 fireplaces in the Briarcliffe Knolls condos after the defective equipment caused two fires there.  According to an engineering report conducted after the fires in the 800 block of Farnham Lane and the 1400 block of Johnstown Court, the fireplaces in the Knolls condos were installed in violation of city code. The fire in the 1400 block of Johnstown Court occurred in March 2011. According to a release from the Wheaton Fire Department, the fire started in the attic and spread through the building’s floors and walls. The fire in the 800 block of Farnham Lane occurred in November 2010. The two-story building sustained smoke and water damage on the first and second floors, and fire damage in the …

Our primary issue (in Knolls) is not that the codes changed over time. The building code says the fireplaces need to be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. In our case, the manufacturer's (Martin Industries) instructions said they must be installed with an approved Martin Industries floo & chimney. The fireplaces inspected were not installed this way; rather, they were …   more ›

Wheaton Student to Board: 'Accidental Racism' an Issue

Wheaton Warrenville South sophomore suggests high school students lack awareness on issues of race.

A District 200 student expressed concern to board members and staff Monday that racism in her school is a “big problem” that has gone unnoticed. Hannah Howell, a sophomore at Wheaton Warrenville South, said that as she has gotten involved in school activities over the past two years, she’s heard her peers utter ignorant and inconsiderate remarks “without even really knowing it.”  “My biggest problem is the use of the word ‘ghetto,’” she said. She hasn’t challenged use of the term as racist, but she has asked classmates what they meant by it. “They always give me, ‘Well, a lot of Mexican people go here’ … or, ‘A lot of black people go here.’” Or, “’This place is dirty’ translates to: ‘This is ghetto.’” Use of the ‘N-word’ is also common, …

Cinema-Eatery to Open in Wheaton

Studio Movie Grill expected to open early 2012 in Rice Lake Square.

Wheaton is getting a movie theater. Locals won't have to travel for dinner-and-a-movie dates after Studio Movie Grill opens in Wheaton's Rice Lake Square early next year. The cinema-eatery—expected to open in the first quarter of 2012—will show major box office films in its nine theaters and serve from a menu of more than 100 items, according to Lynne McQuaker, director of creative affairs for Studio Movie Grill (SMG).  SMG will be the tenant of the 30,000-square-foot space at 301 Rice Lake Square, a former movie theater before it was most recently occupied by Linens-N-Things. Jim Kozik, director of economic development for the City of Wheaton said SMG has not applied for their construction permits, but are completing their construction …

Park District Commits to Bring Hotel to Arrowhead

Park District board of commissioners sign letter of commitment with golf course developer Fairway Suites, LLC to bring a hotel to Arrowhead in Wheaton.

The Wheaton Park District entered into an agreement Wednesday to bring a hotel to the Arrowhead Golf Club property. Officials signed a letter of commitment with Fairway Suites, LLC, allowing them to represent the park district in presentations to hotel chains such as Marriot, Hilton and Hyatt for a potential project. According to a report submitted to the park district by Fairway, the hotel would have approximately 120 suites. Assuming the hotel operates at 70 percent occupancy, the hotel would generate 45,000 guests per year, the report states. Board Commissioner Kim VanderSchaaf said that the hotel would not meet the mission of the park district and was not needed at the facility. Commissioner Phil Luetkehans said the hotel would help …

Once again the Park District has initiated an action with little or no public notification or involvement. Have independent market studies been undertaken for this hotel concept? Has anyone noticed the high percentage of empty parking spaces at new hotel/suites in the nearby Canterra development? Exactly what are the terms of the agreement for construction and on-going maintenance and operation …   more ›

I've seen many show choirs this year and I have to say there are many very talented show choirs across the USA. The difference that I see is that other show choirs have a couple of good songs where I say to myself "wow, that's really good." The Classics Show Choir, from Wheaton Warrenville South High School, rocks it out from beginning to end in a non-stop, high energy flurry of top-notch singing…   more ›

Wheaton Native Could be America's Next Top Model

Kasia Pilewicz of Wheaton is competing on the current season of "America's Next Top Model" on the CW. The Daily Herald spoke with Pilewicz about her experience with the show.

A Wheaton woman is competing on the CW show, "America's Next Top Model (ANTM)" this season, which has aired two episodes. Kasia Pilewicz, who was 26 at the start of the season, says on her ANTM profile that her biggest fear on the show is making sure she'll be herself on camera. "I guess I'm just hoping that I, myself, in the raw, will be enough," she wrote. The Daily Herald reported on Pilewicz's experience on the show. She talked about her role among the other models—one of the older contestants, a "role model" and her thoughts on being a plus-size model.  "America's Next Top Model" airs Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. CT on the CW.
