St. Francis High School starts campaign to upgrade its athletic field and facilities.
St. Francis High School has kicked off a campaign to upgrade its athletic complex with a new synthetic turf field, a six-lane, weather-resistent track, bleachers, a press box and a practice and concessions facility, with hopes to break ground in May. St. Francis graduates Ron and Theresa Kuhn donated an "early Christmas present" of $1 million to put toward the $5 million project, and four other donors donated another $1 million, according to a message from school president Tom Bednar and board chair Phil Kerr on the school's website. The St. Francis girls volleyball team wins the ninth state title for the Spartans, the first since 2006.
The St. Francis High School girls volleyball team won the school's ninth state title Saturday with a 25-21, 25-20 over Richmond-Burton. Molly Haggerty had 12 kills, Maddie Haggerty had seven and Mary Boken had three, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Spartans, led by coach Peg Kopec, last won a state title in 2006 when Megan Boken, the victim of a fatal shooting Aug. 18 in St. Louis, led the team to a victory. Mary Boken, who told the Tribune she was just a little girl when Megan Boken's team won in 2006, said her teammates have been like sisters to her this year, "It means so much to me," she said. Case Western Reserve University senior Ryan Ferguson, a St. Francis High School alum, is named the University Athletic Association Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Following a career-high 19-tackle effort this past Saturday, Case Western Reserve University senior linebacker and St. Francis High School alum Ryan Ferguson has been selected as the University Athletic Association Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week. He earns the UAA weekly honor for the second time in his career. Ferguson racked up 19 tackles, including a career-best 15 solo stops, and made a key interception as the Spartans won 24-17 in overtime at Oberlin College. For the season, the fourth-year Spartan leads the UAA and ranks in the top 20 in Division III with 81 tackles. He also has a forced fumble and four pass break-ups. The Wheaton native killed in St. Louis was talking to her mom on her cell phone when she was shot, according to Fox Chicago News.
St. Louis Police detectives believe Megan Boken struggled with her killer and was shot to death in a random attempted robbery — and the chief of police says "no concrete leads" have emerged. "We're really here to make a public appeal and ask for more information," Police Chief Dan Isom told reporters Monday afternoon. Fox Chicago reported Monday night that 23-year-old Boken was talking on a cell phone to her mother when she was shot in her car. Authorities say Wheaton's Megan Boken was gunned down outside an apartment building in St. Louis.
A 23-year-old Wheaton native was shot to death while outside a St. Louis apartment building, authorities said. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Megan Boken was found about 2:20 p.m. Saturday with gunshots to her neck and chest. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Witnesses told police they’d seen Boken arguing with a man who was either exiting her vehicle or had opened the door to it. St. Louis police do not have anyone in custody, according to ABC 7 News. Police describe the suspected gunman as an African-American male, in his mid-20's, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, with a thin build and short hair, according to CBS News. The Chicago Sky will honor Coach, Peg Kopec from St. Francis High School in Wheaton for her outstanding commitment as a leader of young women at its celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Title IX during its Aug. 17 game. The Chicago Sky Foundation chose nine local women to be a part of the Honorary Title IX team, who will be celebrated at a pre-game reception and during half-time at the Aug. 17 game against the Atlanta Dreams at the Allstate Arena. St. Francis High School Girls win state championship game against Chatham Glenwood. The title is the first ever for the St. Francis girls soccer team.
The St. Francis girls soccer team won the Class 2A State Championship game 2-1 against Chatham Glenwood Saturday, Jun. 2 at North Central College.
