The Editor's Corner

Congratulations to the Wheaton Classes of 2012!

Patch recognizes a couple hundred of the Wheaton seniors for their insane smarts, athletic prowess, exploring their inner do-gooder and everything else that makes us proud. And if we missed someone, it's ridiculously easy to add your superstar.

Today is graduation day in Wheaton. Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South high school graduates of the Class of 2012 will toss up their hats, hug, cry, stir and laugh over memories of high school.  And if you're just glad that nonsense is finally over and thinking, 'now it's on to the good stuff'—you're not alone, either. There are so many of you grads, and unfortunately, I can only shout out to a couple hundred seniors that we've recognized in the past year for their impeccable brainpower, their athletic prowess or their impressive humanitarianism.  So, I hope a few proud parents, siblings, teachers, coaches and friends can add a little something about their superstars in the comments, and add some photos from the day's festivities…

Wheaton Officials Agree Developer Can Build Senior Housing at Courthouse Square

Wheaton City Council members direct staff to prepare an amendment to the Courthouse Redevelopment Project Area Plan and Program to incorporate senior housing at Courthouse Square.

Wheaton City Council voted 5-2 Monday to recommend city staff prepare changes to the Courthouse Square development plan to allow for construction of senior housing on the property. At a public hearing, representatives of the developer, Courthouse Land Development, LLC and the city said the proposed amendments to the 2005 development plan would be legal and in conformance with Tax Increment Financing (TIF) requirements.  Councilman Todd Scalzo said he thinks residents at existing Courthouse Square properties should understand Council’s recommendation does not expand nor limit the developer’s rights. “The question tonight is, ‘Can this be done?’… And the answer to that is, ‘Yes,’” he said. “It does not answer the ultimate question which is…

No is opposed to seniors. The city is bailing out themselves, Airhart and Focus from there stupidity. If you bought in the development, than developers needs to stick to the terms of the agreement. If the developer loses his shirt, its called free entreprise. You don't change zoning to accommodate stupidity.   more ›

Developer Proposes New Senior Living Facility for Wheaton

Wheaton's zoning board begins public hearing process for proposed assisted living facility in north Wheaton.

Wheaton's zoning board on Tuesday night continued a public hearing for the consideration of the development of a senior living facility at 219 Parkway Drive in Wheaton, TribLocal reported Wednesday. Chicago-based developer Supportive Living Services, LLC submitted an application for permitting for a planned unit development, to allow the developer to begin construction of the proposed four-story building that would house approximately 80 units. The target population for private assisted living facility would be seniors around 85, according to a memo from city staff. City staff recommended approval of the plans for the development. According to TribLocal, a resident had concerns the four-story bilding would tower over its neighboring …

Hopefully there will be "in unit" laundry facilities. I am just sorry the Downtown plans "fell" though!   more ›

WNHS Commencement Speech: "You Can't Refudiate Resiculous"

WNHS grad Rachel Poe tells her graduating class to go out into the world with confidence, courage, spirit and sagacity.

Wheaton North '11 graduate Rachel Poe shared her commencement speech with Patch. Poe will attend Wheaton College next fall. I can remember my first significant moment of high school as if it were yesterday: no, it wasn't my first dance or my first bad grade on a test. It was the first (of many) significantly embarrassing moments. This one in particular happened to occur on one of my very first days as a freshman. At the time, the seniors had a fondness for poking holes in water bottles and polishing the floors with a glossy, slick layer of water. Unfortunately, as a bewildered freshman, I was oblivious to these inviting puddles; I bet you can guess what happened next. I slipped not just once, but four times in one day, concluding my …
