ProActive Kids, Good Samaritan Hospital Partner to Fight Childhood Obesity

The Wheaton-based foundation will offer a three-tiered childhood obesity intervention program at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

By Amanda Luevano, Downers Grove Patch Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove is partnering with a local organization to offer free programs for children struggling with unhealthy weight. The Wheaton-based ProActive Kids (PAK) Foundation announced its partnership with the hospital Tuesday, making Downers Grove its fourth site location in DuPage County.  Together, with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, the foundation will bring the ProActive Kids programs to the Downers Grove community and surrounding municipalities to fight the growing childhood obesity epidemic. Exercise is Exhilerating for Kids at Parks Plus

Kids programs at Wheaton Park District fitness center teach nutrition and promote fitness.

Parks Plus intern Kim Trippi knows kids love to move. As a senior at Illinois State studying Exercise Science, Trippi chose Wheaton’s Parks Plus Fitness Center for her final internship because she’d have the chance to work with kids. With a specific interest in children's fitness and the prevention and treatment of obesity, Trippi developed a program for young visitors to the Kids Kingdom Child Care service, where children will participate in “fit & fun” activities. Running, chasing, active-style games will be part of the daily routine.  “Kids are more active and have more fun when they play together," Trippi said. Youngsters Graduate from Life-changing Nutrition Program

Parents observe improvements in their children's self-esteem and nutritional decision-making.

A knowledge of the 3 Rs was not the prerequisite for this graduation. Rather, knowledge about nutrition, fitness and good lifestyle choices earned these students passing grades. Youngsters completing the seventh session of the ProActive Kids Foundation (PAK) graduated June 3 in ceremonies at the Wheaton Park District’s Rice Lake Community Center. The session included families from Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Naperville and Warrenville. The 10 yongsters saw decreases in their body mass index and a positive increase in their social indicators. Parents said they have seen many changes in their children regarding self-esteem and better nutritional decision making as a result of the program. They indicated that as a family they have made …
