Whiz Kids: To Celebrate Season, Soccer Team Sends Christmas Gifts to Impoverished Children

The girls U9 Wings soccer team made shoebox gifts for Operation Christmas Child at end-of-season celebration.

After finishing their season with an 8-2 record, the Wheaton Park District U9 girls Wings soccer team celebrated at a party where they made Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise have any this year.  The team of 10 girls filled two shoeboxes with gifts for the Operation Christmas Child Initiative, which sends them to third world countries and impoverished areas of the United States. The Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes include a toy, an educational gift, a hygiene item, sweets and a personal note from the giver. The Wings made two boxes for girls, ages 5-9, Sammons said.  "It's nice to help somebody once in awhile, or all the time," said Juliana Gonzalez, 8, a forward for the Wings who contributed toothbrushes to the gift …

Is the thrill of getting rid of stuff as much of a disorder as hoarding?

Hoarding seems to be all the rage these days, and I wonder what it is about this moment in history that has brought out this particular brand of crazy in the human race. I suppose some will try to make the case, as they frequently do with autism, that this disorder has always been around and has just now been given a fancy label. To which I say what I always say: I sure don’t remember being around tons of people like this when I was growing up to the point where I said to myself “There really oughta be a name for that.” But these days you can’t hardly swing a dead cat without hitting someone who has a house full of dead cats.
