Mayor's 'State of the City' to Address Wheaton's Goals, Future Development

Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk will deliver his "State of the City" address twice Thursday at a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce lunch and a community forum.

Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk on Thursday will address the city's goals for 2013 at his annual State of the City address noon at Arrowhead Golf Club and 7 p.m. at the Wheaton Community Center. Gresk recited the address Wednesday at a Wheaton Rotary meeting, covering the city's four strategic priorities, including financial stability, quality infrastructure, efficient and effective services and economic development.  City Council in 2011 set the following goals to guide Council and staff decisions: Financial Stability  The goal: To maintain a positive financial position with a long-term perspective of achieving greater reliance on local revenue sources. Grab a Free Slice of Pizza at Jet's on Jan. 26

To celebrate a slew of new store openings, Jet's Pizza is giving away free slices and T-shirts later this month.

To celebrate a big 2012 in which it doubled the number of stores it has, Jet's Pizza is giving away free slices later this month.  On Saturday, Jan. 26, Jet's will give away one free slice of its signature deep dish pizza to each customer between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. That deal is good at Jet's 12 Chicago area stores, including the one that just opened here in Wheaton.  In Wheaton, Jet's is at 936 E. Roosevelt Rd. The first 50 people at each Jet's store will also receive a free Jet's T-shirt.  Jet’s doubled its Illinois presence in 2012 with seven new store openings (Arlington Heights, Champaign, Chicago, Joliet, Libertyville, Lombard and Wheaton), bringing the total number of Jet’s Pizzas in the state to 13. Opening Soon: Fast Food at The Stand in Downtown Glen Ellyn

The restaurant is expected to open sometime in March if construction goes as planned.

The owners of Ellyn's Tap & Grill in Glen Ellyn are opening a new restaurant, Warren's Ale House, at 51 Town Square in Wheaton, with an opening date set for Monday, Jan. 14, according to the restaurant's Facebook page. Year in Review

New Businesses to Look for in 2013

Wheaton residents can expect a few major business openings in 2013, including Mariano's Fresh Market, Walgreens, two restaurants and more.

As we head into the new year, Wheaton residents can expect quite a few new businesses to pop up around town.  Arguably the biggest development underway is Mariano's Fresh Market at 625 Main St., the former Hubble/Wheaton Central school site. Developers predict the store will open in October 2013. Bricks Pizza, set to open this fall and delayed to mid-December, should open early 2013 and Warren's Ale House, also set to open in fall 2012, should also be open early in the new year. Aveda, 109 N. Main St. should open in 2013 after a few delays in fall 2012. City officials say Aveda owners still have not obtained their building permit. Walgreens developers told city officials the new store at 2191 Roosevelt Rd. could open in June 2013. Wheaton …

Year in Review: Wheaton's New Businesses in 2012

Patch looks back at new businesses that opened in Wheaton this year.

From resale clothing stores to a national movie theater chain, Wheaton's economic development department has been busy bringing new businesses to town in 2012.  Billy's Closet with pieces by designers Armani, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren lining the walls. Five Guys burgers opened at 141 Danada Square East in the spring. Fashion jewelry chain Charming Charlie opened its doors at 261 Town Square Wheaton in May. Movie theater and restaurant Studio Movie Grill opened in Rice Lake Square on June 8, becoming Wheaton's only movie theater and one of 10 destination theaters in a Forbes' list of "Movie Theaters Worth Traveling For." AAA to Open in Former Walgreens Space

Zoning board supports application for a AAA service station at 1790 S. Blanchard St.

AAA plans to open a service station at the former Walgreen's location at 1790 S. Blanchard St. at the corner of Naperville Road and Blanchard Street.  The office would also be an office for travel and insurance sales, according to a city staff memo.  MPV Properties applied for zoning approval with the city earlier this month. The city's planning and zoning board voted 5-0 in favor of the development and will go before City Council for final approval, according to Triblocal. Triblocal reported the shop could open in the fall of 2013.

Former Chicago Cub Opens Jet's Pizza in Wheaton

A businessman and former Chicago Cubs player has opened a pizza restaurant he remembers seeing everywhere in his home state of Michigan. Jet’s Pizza, 936 E. Roosevelt Rd. in Wheaton opened in October as one of only a few stores in Illinois, said owner and Naperville resident, Mike Avallone. Like Wheaton Patch on Facebook. “I’ve been in the corporate world for 30-plus years and always wanted to open up my own business,” he said. Jet’s originated in Michigan, where there are 190 stores of 270 nationwide, he said. Before the corporate world, Avallone played for the Chicago Cubs as a pitcher in the minors program in 1977, ’78 and ’79.
