Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk on Monday appointed Thor Saline, an unopposed City Council candidate in the city's East District, to be the interim councilman in the currently vacant at-large seat. W. Thoreson “Thor” Saline announced in November he is running for the East District seat to replace longtime Councilman Tom Mouhelis who decided not to seek re-election after 12 years in office. A municipal electoral board will review City Council candidate Frank Garcia's eligibility to run for City Council after John Prendiville filed an objection relating to his voter registration status.
A municipal electoral board will review one candidate’s objection to the other candidate’s eligibility to run for the At-Large City Council seat in the 2013 municipal election. John Prendiville said Wednesday his objection is that when his opponent, Frank Garcia, filed his nomination papers, he was not a registered voter in Wheaton and therefore does not qualify to run for office. Garcia, who filed for candidacy on Dec. 26, said he registered to vote in Wheaton about a week ago. According to the City of Wheaton, candidates must be registered voters of the City of Wheaton and must live within city limits for at least one year. Four people have filed for candidacy in the 2013 election of the Wheaton Park District Board of Commissioners. The residents running to fill three seats include Jane Hodgkinson, former director of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, and incumbents, current President John Kelly, Mark Schobel and Steve Fieweger. The board is comprised of seven volunteers who represent about 53,000 residents in Wheaton. Terms for the four other board members—Vice President Phil Luetkehans, Terry Mee, Ray Morrill and Kim VanderSchaaf—continue until 2015. The consolidated election will be April 9, 2013. The District 200 Board of Education tonight will vote on a referendum question asking taxpayers to support an increase to pay for a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center. The board last month reviewed two revised and less expensive concepts for a new school to replace the 1958 structure that currently houses students at 130 N. Hazelton Ave. The $17.6 million, 59,000-square-foot concept is less expensive than the originally proposed $29 million and $18.3 million projects, and eliminates plans for district administrative offices and the additional parking they would require. Nine people have filed petitions for candidacy for the District 200 Board of Education in the 2013 election, including three incumbents. There are four Board of Education seats up for election to a four-year term. James Mathieson, a downtown Wheaton property owner active in the Downtown Wheaton Association (DWA) will be the first person on the ballot. Incumbent Ken Knicker will be the second person on the ballot and Harold Lonks, who ran for the board in 2011, will be the third person on the ballot. Petitions for nomination are filed with the Wheaton City Clerk, City Hall, 303 West Wesley Street, Second Floor, Wheaton, Illinois. The filing period begins Monday, Dec. 17 and ends Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Wheaton City Councilman Todd Scalzo was first to file his petition for candidacy in the 2013 consolidated municipal election. Councilman Phil Suess also filed his petition Monday for re-election to his seat in the city's north district. Todd Scalzo announced his re-election campaign for his seat in the west district at Cosley Zoo's "Run for the Animals" in June. Jeanne Ives Monday resigned from her at-large position on Wheaton City Council, opening the seat for re-election in the April 2013 consolidated election. Ives was elected Nov. 6 to the vacant 42nd Illinois House District seat and will take office next year. Petitions for Ives' two-year position are available at City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St., Wheaton, according to a release from the city of Wheaton. The last day Ives could resign would have been Nov. 30 to allow time for an election to the seat.
