Wheaton's Shelton Thompson took first overall at the Nov. 2 Cantigny 5K and Samantha Poglitsh, 10, was fastest of the women racers. Race proceeds to benefit Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton.
Wheaton runners dominated the Cantigny 5K last weekend, with top finishers in the men's and women's races. With a mile pace of 5:51, Shelton Thompson of Wheaton finished first in the Nov. 2 race with a chip time of 17 minutes and 49 seconds (17:49.61). The 17-year-old Wheaton North High School senior was among 900 runners and walkers at Cantigny Park. The top female runner with a chip time of 20:41.15 was Samantha Poglitsch, 10, of Wheaton. Second and third, respectively, went to Hannah Smith (17, Mundelein) and Ruth Roberts (44, Naperville). Poglitsch is the youngest female winner in the Cantigny 5K’s 9-year history. Ivy Restaurant will host a Veterans' weekend to raise money for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton.
Ivy Restaurant, 120 N. Main St. in downtown Wheaton will host a three-day Veterans Day event to honor veterans' service and raise money for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton. The Ivy chef and culinary staff will serve creative entrees and cocktails reminiscent of past eras veterans would appreciate, according to an announcement from the restaurant. Hockey players are not all rough and tumble. When they have the right reason, they'll bake, shop and do arts and crafts. Last weekend, local players from junior varsity and varsity combined teams from Bartlett High, Wheaton North, West Chicago, St. Francis and Wheaton Academy took a home-cooked meal, stockings, Christmas ornaments and gift cards to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. The teams cooked a ham donated by Trader Joe's, and made potatoes, carrots, French bread and a salad with food donated by Dominick's in Wheaton for the five men at the shelter. For dessert, varsity player Kyle Florian baked homemade chocolate chip cookies, and with a gift card donated by Graham’s Fine Chocolates, the team bought assorted truffles. The …

Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Inc. in Wheaton has been selected as a finalist for Aprons in Action, The Home Depot Foundation’s Facebook voting program, and now has the opportunity to win a $25,000 gift card from The Home Depot. Voting began Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 31 at www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation. The organization with the most votes will win the $25,000 prize, and be in the running for the grand prize of $250,000 at the end of the year-long program. The runner-up organizations from each month will receive $5,000 in The Home Depot gift cards. During the Aprons in Action Contest, which began in April 2011, 11 monthly winners will be selected.
