LGBTQ students, alumni and supporters gather at a church one town over.
A momentous occasion. That’s how one attendee of the OneWheaton Homecoming event in Glen Ellyn described an evening that marked a gathering of Wheaton students, alumni, family and friends who came out to support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community at the evangelical college—one town over. As the evening featuring Grammy-nominated Christian music artist and out lesbian Jennifer Knapp as well as OneWheaton panelists unfolded, supporters and the curious trickled in by ones, twos and groups to quickly pack the sanctuary at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn. During her performance Knapp discussed the acceptance of her sexuality. She said many people told her she was gay before she herself knew she …

How much will you allow your child to spend on Homecoming?
It’s Homecoming Week at Glenbard South High School and Wheaton North High School. That means it’s time for moms and dads to open up their wallets and fork over the dough. So how much will you let your kid spend? There’s dinner, dresses, suits, corsages, boutonnières, limos, and many other homecoming staples that your kid will need (or want). When is it enough? Where do you draw the line? I’m too embarrassed to say how much I spent on homecomings and proms. I paid for some of it on my own but my parents chipped in a lot. One year, I had to have a one-of-a-kind dress—literally. I bought it from a boutique and they marked down the high school I attended so no other girl from my school could purchase the same dress. Writing this down now …

Glenbard North proves to be no match for Wheaton South's offensive juggernaut.
Many thought Friday night's DVC contest pitting host Wheaton Warrenville South against Glenbard North would be a toe-to-toe slugfest between two of the state's top-ranked teams in their respective classes. But after the final horn sounded, it turned out to be just another dominating victory for the Tigers, who surprisingly mopped up on the previously undefeated Panthers, 49-6. Glenbard North, ranked No. 1 in the latest AP Class 8A state poll, ran behind its massive offensive line and pounded away at the Tigers—the state's No.2-ranked Class 7A team—during two long first-quarter drives. The latter drive resulted in a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Ng to fullback Mark Szwan for a 6-0 lead. However, it was all Wheaton South from …

My family was always the poorest family in town. I worked to pay for things like homecoming dresses. I went to a lot of resale stores, TJ Maxx-type places. I always managed to find something. It was never what I really WANTED but I learned to live with it. If I didn't have money to buy...like my freshman year dances....I borrowed from a friend. I don't think there is any reason for a ton of money…   more ›
