One Divot—a charity founded by Wheaton resident and 2011 Walking Golfer of the Year, Jim Colton—announces the launch of Hundred Hole Hike (HHH), a giving platform hosted at www.hundredholehike.com that supports fund raising efforts of “golf marathoners,” who will play and walk at least 100 holes in one day to benefit philanthropic causes. Managed by One Divot, HHH is inspired by the success of the Ben Cox 155. Launched in 2011 at Ballyneal Golf & Hunt Club in Holyoke, CO, when club member Jim Colton walked 155 holes in one day and raise more than $110,000 for Cox, a Ballyneal caddie paralyzed in a skiing accident. A society of dedicated men and women seeking to use their passion for the game as a vehicle to better the lives of others, HHH …

Operating surpluses at the golf course subsidize the food service losses but the future of food service hinges on a master plan drafted by the village recreation department, which is under review by the National Golf Foundation.
The food service division at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn loses thousands of dollars each year, which is subsidized by surpluses created over time by other operations at the course. Since 2006 food service operations have lost $156,065, according to village budget information. Although food service does not generate positive cash flow for Village Links, upgrading the restaurant and the golf course is part of the $3.9 million renovation plan crafted by the village recreation department. The plan is currently under review by the National Golf Foundation, which is scheduled to issue a report to the village board in December. NGF was hired by the village for $18,500 to review the feasibility of the current plan. In June 2010, the …

With food services at Village Links losing money, what lessons can be learned from other towns?
Part of the Village Links of Glen Ellyn $3.9 million Master Plan to renovate and update offerings at the course includes expanding food service operations, despite having lost $156,065 since 2006. Some village leaders suggested privatizing food service operations at the course, but Recreation Director Matt Pekarek does not believe that is the best plan. Pekarek maintains that golfers at the course lose out on enhanced customer service if food is handled by a third party. “Focusing on food and beverage profitability is a detriment when you look at the overall picture of golf operations. We’re focused on the customer and providing that service, even if it’s not profitable,” Pekarek told Patch. But how do other village-owned courses handle …

Some village leaders think privatizing is a legitimate option, but Village Links staff disagrees.
As Glen Ellyn leaders ponder the future of the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, will privatization of food services be an option? It’s been proposed before, but met with resistance from Recreation Director Matt Pekarek who sees privatization as a detriment to the overall customer-service experience at the golf course, despite the fact that the current food services program has operated at a loss since 2006. Maximizing food service revenue is something Brad Rosley, a former recreation commissioner thinks the course should be doing. When his ideas of privatizing food services were disregarded, Rosley stepped down from his position as commissioner in 2010. Rosley also thinks the current master plan misses the objective. “The plans would make for …

Wheaton North settles for fifth place but will be sending three individual golfers to next week's Bartlett sectional.
There's a well-known golf saying, "A bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work." It proved to be a great day for Wheaton Warrenville South, as well as for a few freshmen from Wheaton North during Thursday's Class 3A Wheaton Warrenville South regional at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. The Tigers took third place and the team now advances to Monday's Bartlett sectional. Joining them at Bartlett Hills will be Wheaton North freshmen Matt Winkelman, Justin Harrington and Michael Suazo. Lyons edged Hinsdale Central, 298 to 300, for the regional title, while the Tigers were a distant third with a 312, but comfortably ahead of fourth place Glenbard West's 325. "It was a great day today. Not too hot, not much wind at all and the…

Dukelow, Kelly, Sanders, and Mulhearn make the cut at Hawthorn Woods.
A foursome of Wheaton golfers will hit the links again Wednesday at Hawthorn Woods Country Club after making the cut at the PGA’s Illinois Open championship. Rich Dukelow, a pro at Cantigny Golf, leads the quartet at 2-under-par after shooting a 72 Tuesday on the par-71 course. He’s tied for seventh, eight strokes behind Philip Arouca of Wilmette. “I was a little sloppy out there today,” Dukelow said. “I hit a couple errant shots and didn’t putt quite as well, but I enjoyed the day. It played a little harder today than it did yesterday.” Dukelow bogeyed the first two holes, but birdies on the third and sixth holes brought him back to even par for the day. A double bogey on the 471-yard, par-4 eighth hole proved costly, however. He managed …

Wheaton Warrenville South junior Tee-K Kelly improved 47 positions in the individual standings of the boys state tournament in Bloomington with second-round 72. St. Francis has two finalists, and Solberg competes near Decature in girls tournament.
BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL—Tee-K Kelly had nothing to lose. The Wheaton Warrenville South junior, making his second consecutive appearance at the Class 3A state golf tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, was barely top 80 after a first-round 87 on Friday afternoon. But Kelly dramatically reversed his fortunes with a second-round, level-par 72 that lifted him from a weighty logjam at 78 after Friday into a tie for 31st overall on Saturday. Kelly opened second-round play Saturday on the back nine in one of the final pairings. His first tee shot, both downwind and downhill, traveled over 350 yards. "I hit pitching wedge to the first par-5 and made an easy birdie from there," Kelly said of his opening hole. "I just made a lot more putts …

Not bad considering these last two years in Chicago have been devastating in the golf business. The food service is only there to compliment the golf course but when you have a bad year in golf, the revenues will not cover expenses. Do not outsource the food service!! Big mistake!!!! Look for improved efficiencies within including hours of operation, staffing, scaled back, simpler menus, pricing…   more ›
