Glenbard West 10, Lincoln-Way East 8: Henry Haeffner's first-half passing and Hayden Carlson's ferocious defense powered the Hilltoppers to a heart-stopping victory in the Class 7A state championship game Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
Henry Haeffner played a game of hot potato with a cold football. Haeffner completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Glenbard West’s 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the Class 7A state championship football game Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Haeffner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathan Marcus with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hayden Lekacz added a 27-yard field goal as the Hilltoppers (14-0) extended their lead to 10-0 at halftime. Glenbard West turned to its defense to bottle up Lincoln-Way East's Tom Fuessel as the Hilltoppers wrapped up their first state championship since 1983 and handed Lincoln-Way East (13-1) its first defeat on a 30-degree afternoon and early evening. Glenbard West 3, Wheaton North 0: The Hilltoppers scored on a second-quarter field goal and relied on a stout defense to prevail in Saturday's Class 7A football quarterfinal game.
Hayden Lekacz kicked a 32-yard field goal with 9:17 left in the first half and Glenbard West's defense did the rest as the Hilltoppers edged Wheaton North 3-0 in a Class 7A football quarterfinal on Saturday. The Hilltoppers beat the Tigers, 21-7, in the season opener that was televised by ESPN2.
It was payback time Sunday morning at Red Grange Field for Glenbard West, whose season was ended by Wheaton Warrenville South in the playoffs the past two years. Despite seven turnovers—four by the Hilltoppers and three by the Tigers—Glenbard West finished up strong with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away and register a 21-7 victory over WWS in a game televised nationally on ESPN2. The loss was the Tigers’ first in nearly two years. WWS, which went undefeated last season en route to winning its second consecutive Class 7A state title, last lost on Sept. 4, 2009 to Maine South.
