Wheaton police reports, May 11-19
SUNDAY, MAY 19 Police charged Humberto Banuelas, 40, of the 1200 block of Kings Court, West Chicago, with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license. Banuelas was driving a white 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander at 2:04 a.m. at Gables and Roosevelt Road when police initiated a traffic stop. Banuelas was booked at the Wheaton Police Department and released later that morning. Police charged Rory B. Smith, 57, of the 800 block of 72nd Street, Downers Grove, with driving under the influence of alcohol. Smith was arrested at 12:02 a.m. at Main Street and Willow while driving a red 2001 Honda, according to a police report. Karlos Leath pleads not guilty of driving under the influence in a crash that killed Wheaton Warrenville South senior Stephanie Pickett.
A Warrenville man has pleaded not guilty of an aggravated DUI charge after a crash that killed Wheaton Warrenville South High School senior Stephanie Pickett, the Daily Herald reported Monday. Karlos Leath, 31, is charged with two counts of aggravated DUI in an accident causing death after the April 25 crash that killed the teen on Shaffner Road north of Mack Road, according to a DuPage County Sheriff's Office statement. It is alleged that at approximately 10:32 p.m. Thursday, Leath and Pickett were traveling southbound on Shaffner Road in Winfield when, while approaching Mack Road, Leath lost control of his vehicle, swerved off the road and crashed into trees on the north side of Mack. The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. MONDAY, MAY 6 Police charged Tiffany D. Miller, 33, of the 700 block of South Gables, Wheaton, with driving while license revoked. Miller drove a copper 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse near the intersection of Center and Westhaven at about 9:05 a.m. when police stopped her. She was arrested and released from the Wheaton Police Department later that morning. Police charged Jerry O.
