Prosecutors Deny Violating Murder For Hire Suspect's Rights

Gordon Vanderark accused of plotting to kill judge, prosecutor and two others.

Prosecutors contend they did not violate Gordon Vanderak's rights when they had him transported from prison to DuPage County last year before charging the former Wheaton man in a murder-for-hire plot. In court records recently filed, prosecutors dispute Vanderark's attorney's claims that it was illegal to bring Vanderark to DuPage County on a writ - a judge's order - for a hearing related to an old DUI case when prosecutors and the judge knew that was not why authorities wanted Vanderak moved from Centralia Correctional Center. "The use of the writ, where the underlying desire was of a nature other than that (of) the status of the defendant's car was legitimate nontheless," according to a formal response filed last week. Vanderark, 54, is …

Although the "get tough on crime" stance plays well to voters and the public's easily manipulated and fearful mindset, it also leads to an authoritarian governance and legal system. DuPage has had a long history of "guilty until proven innocent" . Although I truly detest crime, I never want to see an excessive burden placed on those who are innocent. The Texas model of criminal justice is not the…   more ›
