This is one of the things Sara Arnas, curator at the DuPage County Historical Museum, appreciates most about the museum’s latest exhibit. “We wanted to do something unique,” Arnas said. “Very little has been done on folk art, but there is fascinating history in these everyday items.” “Early Illinois Folk Art, 1825-1925” took more than two years to organize. It is the largest changing exhibit the museum has ever presented, occupying three floors of displays, with over one-hundred items loaned from private collectors and museums across the country. "Train Days" are the third and fifth Saturday afternoons of every month.
In the corporate world, it’s known as “logistics,” managing the transportation of goods between origin and destination. At the DuPage County Historical Museum, it’s known as playing with trains. Begun in 1956, the first layout was constructed in a former chicken coop on a farm in Lombard. Ten years later, that layout had out-grown the coop and needed a new home. A group of women that prepares year-round for the holiday season is in its last weeks of crafting and pricing items to sell at the 28th Annual Holiday Bazaar at the DuPage County Historical Museum. The Museum Guild, a group of around 10 women who enjoy crafting and the company of fellow guild members began planning for the 2011 bazaar in February. They’ve met throughout the year to create more than 200 Christmas ornaments that they’ll sell for $1 to $4. While the quality of the items sold at the bazaar is good enough to be sold in a store, Museum Guild Chairperson Mary Udelhofen said, "we try to keep the prices low."
