Letter: Vote 'Yes' for Jefferson Referendum

Wheaton residents write in support of the Jefferson Early Childhood referendum. To send a letter to the editor, email Charlotte@Patch.com.

Wheaton Patch accepts and publishes letters to the editor emailed to Local Editor Charlotte Eriksen at Charlotte@patch.com, or sent as a message through the Wheaton Patch Facebook page. Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. ----------- I am writing to express my support for the Jefferson Referendum. Please vote YES for Jefferson on Tuesday, April 9th. My 4 year old daughter, Cameron or as we call her, "Cammy," has Rett Syndrome and currently attends Jefferson. It has been said by Jan Shaw, who is running for school board, that I am just a “parent of a disabled child who doesn’t want to be told No.”  There is definitely some truth to that. No parent wants to be told "no" when it comes to what is best for their …

Wheaton Patch accepts and publishes letters to the editor emailed to Local Editor Charlotte Eriksen at Charlotte@patch.com, or sent as a message through the Wheaton Patch Facebook page. Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. --------- As a former two term member of the Wheaton City Council, I understand how critical the various governmental bodies are to the overall health and economic vitality of the City. No particular entity is more important to attracting young families, preserving property values and maintaining a positive image of the community than Wheaton Warrenville CUSD 200. It is with this in mind that I strongly endorse Brad Paulsen for election to the board of Education on April 9.  Brad brings …

For those who do not know what Lisa is talking about, Naperville 203 is a larger district, they built an early Learning center that is smaller than what Wheaton proposed and a lot cheaper. If you are still undecided, watch some of the videos that I linked on my webpage: http://janshaw200.com/?page_id=491 (include both candidate forums).   more ›

District 200 Candidates Discuss Common Core

District 200 candidates answer: "What is your knowledge of the common core and how will it benefit the students?" at Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters candidate forum.

Candidates running for the District 200 Board of Education in the April election answered audience questions regarding the district's finances, the Jefferson Early Childhood Center referendum and the common core standards at the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters candidate forum Thursday night.  District 200 began implementing the curriculum to meet common core standards for math in the fall and will implement the language arts and reading components in 2014. To prepare for the more demanding standards, the district earlier this year implemented professional learning communities (PLCs) to give high school teachers time to meet to discuss and decide on best instructional practices in the classroom based on students' …

Letter: 'Shocking' There is Debate Over Jefferson Referendum

Former Wheaton resident writes in support of Jefferson Early Childhood Center referendum.

---------- Dear Editor: I grew up in Wheaton and I’m the father of a 10-year-old who is mentally and physically disabled. It is shocking to me that there is ANY debate in Wheaton over efforts to repair the outdated and inadequate facilities at the Jefferson school for special needs kids. We didn’t sign up to be the parents of a disabled child. There’s no way to describe the financial, physical and emotional strains that families with disabled kids endure. My local school district and …

Hank, I'm sorry that you find my opinions offensive. I grew up in Wheaton, my parents still live there. I shop in Wheaton. I have clients, friends and business partners in Wheaton. I care about how the town treats residents, particularly handicapped residents. For the children at Jefferson who can't talk or write, I want for their voices to be heard somehow. I'm not sure what the former …   more ›

Letter: Re-Elect Barb Intihar to District 200 School Board

Wheaton resident writes in support of Barb Intihar for the District 200 Board of Education.

------------ Strong schools are an essential part of great communities like Wheaton and Warrenville. Teachers, administrators, parents, students, and the school board all work together toward the same goal: a high quality education for the children of our district. Barb Intihar has served on the CUSD 200 School Board since 2001. In that time the board has had to navigate through state budget cuts, school building projects, and education initiatives. Barb listens carefully to all sides of …

At a public hearing Monday in Geneva, Virtual Learning Academy @ Fox River Valley will make a case for an online charter school.

By Rick Nagel, Geneva Patch Illinois Virtual Charter School @ Fox River Valley will present an online alternative to a public-school education—using your tax dollars—during a public hearing Monday night at the Geneva School Board meeting. The charter school would include Community Unit School District 200 and 17 other Fox Valley districts. According to the charter school application, the 18 school boards—which serve more than 250,000 students in grades K-12—will have an option to jointly issue the charter, but "if any of the school districts denies the application, the proposal will be appealed to the State Charter School Commission." If approved, the school would open in August for the 2013-14 school year. Organizers describe the virtual …
