Wheaton South’s Dan Burns Leads Team in Goals, Assists

The junior midfielder also won an All-Conference selection at the Neuqua Valley Regional.

How does Wheaton Warrenville South's varsity soccer squad spell team? B-U-R-N-S. Junior midfielder Dan Burns, the Tiger's star player, is more concerned about his teammates' and team's success than his own breakthrough season. "I just want the team to win," Burns said. "I just want us to be successful. That's all I really care about." And Burns' teammates want him to succeed as well.  Burns' teammates have a great respect for him, cheering 'Go, Burns! Score another goal!' anytime when he is one-on-one with an opposing defender. The Tigers were led by his scoring output of 14 goals and eight assists, adding up to 36 points. The next closest goal scorer was senior forward George Doran with five. The Tigers' lost 2-0 to Plainfield South …

Tigers, Falcons Ready for Playoff Action

The Wheaton North and South soccer teams have struggled this season, but both are optimistic about having some postseason success.

The Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South boys' varsity soccer teams have had disappointing years, but they know glory could still be won.  This afternoon, both clubs will see regional playoff action. The Tigers will face Plainfield South at 4 p.m. at Neuqua Valley while the Falcons will face St. Charles North (15-5-3, 3-3 Upstate Eight River) at 5 p.m. in St. Charles. Wheaton North head coach Bryce Cann said his team has improved by producing a quicker attack. Junior forward Sam Klatt (eight goals) and senior forward Jacques Ntahoturi (four goals) lead the Falcons (5-12-2, 2-4-1 DVC) offensively. "We have been able to generate more consistent opportunities on goal recently which has given us better opportunities to win games," Cann …

Wheaton South Loses to West Aurora 2-1 in Overtime

Boys varsity soccer team falls in overtime, finishing DVC play at 1-6.

AURORA—Sometimes, the ball does not bounce the right way. The Wheaton Warrenville South boys soccer team learned that the hard way during a 2-1 overtime loss to West Aurora on a non-goal. During the second overtime period, West Aurora senior forward Cesar Carcia crossed over to senior midfielders Josue Martinez and Mike Vazques in the Tigers' box. Wheaton South sophomore goalkeeper Tim Reinders dove to stop Vazques' shot, but one of Reinders' teammates accidentally kicked the ball into the Tigers' goal, resulting in a non-goal and a loss. The Blackhawks (16-5-1, 4-3 DuPage Valley Conference) are 5-1 in overtime this year. The Tigers (7-11-3, 1-6 DVC) had many opportunities throughout the match, including overtime. Junior midfielder Dan …

Wheaton Warrenville South Falls 1-0 On Penalty Kick

Glenbard North beat Wheaton Warrenville South in a last minute goal yesterday, Tuesday, Oct. 5, giving the Tigers a 0-4 in the DVC.

Wheaton Warrenville South lost 1-0 to Glenbard North on a penalty kick in the final minute of Tuesday's senior night match at Red Grange Field. The Tigers (6-9-2, 0-4 DuPage Valley Conference) were defending their goal when sophomore goalkeeper Tim Reinders said there was a mistake in the middle. Junior defender Will Huesing tried to clear the ball in the box, but was given a yellow card on holding Glenbard North senior forward Eric Dailly. Dailly then had a penalty kick where Reinders had to defend the net himself. Dailly then rocketed the ball left, just out of Reinders' reach, for the Panthers' (6-4-5, 2-2-1 DVC) 1-0 lead.  "The G-rated version was, 'Oh crap! I'm going to be screwed,' because it is a difficult shot," Reinders said of …

Defense Makes a Difference In Wheaton South Win

The Wheaton Warrenville South boys soccer team posted its first shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over Batavia.

After surrendering five goals Saturday, the Wheaton Warrenville South boys varsity team shutout Batavia 1-0 yesterday, Monday, Sept. 27 at home. The Tigers victory was their first shutout this season. Wheaton South coach Guy Callipari said part of the reason why his team did not have one previously was his players made the two defenders and goalkeeper provide most of the defense. "You can't do that when our opponents are sending numbers and midfielders through," Callipari said. "We have to track back and we were doing a better job at that—especially in the second half. In the first half, there was definitely a learning curve there and we got exposed a couple times." The Tigers (6-7-1) held strong and prevented the Bulldogs (6-5-2) from …

Wheaton South Boys Soccer Team Adjusts to a Younger Roster

The Wheaton Warrenville South boys varsity soccer team has struggled with its new roster, which lost 13 seniors from last year's sectional finals squad.

Last year, Wheaton Warrenville South's boys varsity soccer team made the sectional finals and relied on senior experience to succeed. This year, the Tigers are adjusting to its new team, which lost 13 graduates. Tigers coach Guy Callipari had a 20-5-2 squad last season. His team lost to Neuqua Valley 4-2 on penalty kicks in the sectional finals. This season has been different. Wheaton Warrenville South is 5-7-1 and 0-2 in its DuPage Valley Conference games. However, Callipari has 12 returning juniors and sophomores and only eight outgoing seniors for next year. "We are starting at least eight (juniors and sophomores), but we certainly don't want to look at next year," Callipari said. "By default, we are building towards that end, but we …
