The Wheaton South South girls cross country team captured their second consecutive sectional cross country crown while the Wheaton North boys take fourth in tight field.
Wheaton Warrenville South's girls cross country team apparently was on a mission during Saturday's Class 3A sectional meet in St. Charles. Mission accomplished. Led by top-10 individual performances from sophomore McKenna Kiple and juniors Mikayla Kightlinger and Lauren Mordini, the Tigers edged Geneva 49-53 while capturing their second consecutive sectional championship. Admittedly, the goal coming into the race wasn't necessarily to win the meet, according to Tigers coach Rob Harvey. "Whether we were first or fifth, we wanted to qualify for state," said Harvey, who directed the squad to a third-place state finish in 2009. "That was the first thing. "They ran well," added the coach. "It seems like we get a different 1-2-3-4 runner every …

Wheaton South's Kyle O'Malley finished second in individual competition yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 9 in the Benet Invitational. Wheaton South took fourth overall.
Kyle O'Malley had a persistent thought as the boys cross country West Aurora Stampede reached its climatic stages yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 9. "I wanted to catch the West Aurora guy (Josh Robinson)," the Wheaton Warrenville South junior runner said. "I finished strong, but I saw (Robinson) kicking. If we can't beat them today, we're not going to beat them next week (at the DuPage Valley Conference championship)." O'Malley ultimately failed by one position to track down his West Aurora rival, and the hosts had too much at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 9. West Aurora captured the team title on a sizzling autumnal day in the boys division of its annual invite for the first time in the 22-year history of …

Success is no stranger to coach Nate Roe and the Falcons, who are seeking another trip to the state meet.
Nate Roe can bear witness to Wheaton North's steady climb up the ladder of cross country success since 2003. That year, Roe served as an assistant to longtime head coach Jim Martin, who led the Falcon boys team to its first appearance in the Class AA state meet in more than 25 years. (Wheaton North finished 17th as a team.) The following season, Wheaton North made a return trip to the state tournament, and the Falcons jumped to 12th in the team standings. When Roe took over as head coach in 2005, the Falcons didn't miss a beat as they qualified for state three consecutive years. They were 14th n '05, 10th in '06 and 7th in '07. While they did not qualify in , but the Falcons returned to Detweiller Park in Peoria last November and placed …
