Frank Flores, Jr. was terminated from the College of DuPage for a disorderly conduct incident; he claims the investigation was “cursory” and the charges “malicious and unsubstantiated.”
A candidate in the contested election for College of DuPage Board of Trustees was previously fired from the college’s aquatics department after multiple people alleged incidents of verbal and/or physical sexual harassment, the Daily Herald reports. According to the paper, Frank Flores Jr. was employed as a temporary assistant aquatics manager in fall 2010 until a female lifeguard reported verbal sexual harassment, a claim corroborated by another female student, and a male student who also alleged physical harassment. A patron filed a separate complaint that Flores had made comments to her like, “I want to taste you” and “I peed in the pool,” the paper said. No criminal charges were filed, but after an investigation, Flores was fired on …

The Friends for Education COD Faculty Association PAC is endorsing challengers over two incumbents; the incumbents warn of the danger of a faculty-endorsed Board.
A College of DuPage faculty political-action committee has endorsed challengers Ed Agustin and Frank Flores Jr. for the COD Board over incumbents Dave Carlin and Joe Wozniak (and other candidates Kathy Hamilton and Mike Lanners). The endorsement has become a bone of contention between the candidates, the Daily Herald reports. According to the paper, the endorsements made by Friends for Education COD Faculty Association PAC are notable, contentious and perhaps a double-edged sword in an election coming after 16 months of negotiations that led to a teachers' contract imposed on faculty without union approval last May. Both sides worked out a new deal that was unanimously approved in June. "The board is elected by the community. It's not …

The college hopes to elevate its image and profile after recently completing $500 million in renovation projects to its campus.
The College of DuPage has hired a consultant at the cost of $290,000 in an effort to create a "brand" for the school that will improve its public reputation and allow it to transcend the stigma of "community-college" status, the Daily Herald reports. According to the paper, Ohio branding and marketing firm Ologie already is interviewing students and others affiliated with the college to lay the groundwork for the rebranding. The college hopes to move away from its highly public battles with the Village of Glen Ellyn and its own faculty, and focus on the school's transformation over the past few years, including a $500 million renovation. "I know it is a community college even though we don't have 'community' in the name," COD President …

The fiction works of Robert Bollendorf have acted as textbooks for students studying drug counseling at College of DuPage and Benedictine University. The author discusses his background in education and inspiration behind his books.
How can fiction be used to portray the very real problems of drug abuse? Hundreds of college students have learned about substance abuse and recovery through the works of Lisle resident Dr. Robert Bollendorf. The retired professor of human services at College of DuPage is an accomplished writer whose published works have been used to teach students studying counseling. “People have said that reading these books has changed their lives and their relationships with their family members. It’s been really exciting,” he said. Bollendorf said that his interest in writing was first sparked in 1985 when he had an idea for a story. “I’d never even written a magazine article before. So I put the idea in the back of my mind and didn’t think …

County development committee members approve COD's modified development.
When College of DuPage officials first presented long-term development plans to DuPage County for approval, residents were outspoken about the addition of approximately 734,000 square feet of new buildings. After listening to the concerns of its neighbors, the college presented a new and dramatically scaled back proposed development request. In the second step of a three-step process, DuPage County development committee members voted to approve the modified site plan, which now calls for the addition of approximately 396,000 square feet of new buildings instead of the original 734,000 square feet. DuPage County Board members will have the final vote at an upcoming meeting after reviewing the recommendations of the county zoning board of …

Commissioners voted against COD's expansion plan as a whole.
DuPage County zoning board of appeals commissioners want College of DuPage officials to seek approval on a case-by-case basis for their long-term expansion plan, the Daily Herald reports. After reviewing the proposed long-term development, the commissioners noted the lack of detail in the building plans and voted 7-0 Thursday, recommending to the county board that the college come back for approval for each individual building, the Daily Herald reports. College officials were hoping for approval for the entire project, which would add nearly 734,000 square feet of new buildings to the 273-acre campus. At a May 10 hearing, Robert Kartholl, chairman of the zoning board of appeals, expressed concern about the lack of detail in the buildings…

The chamber says it does not plan to change the yearly event, except its name.
After severing ties with the original partners of Jazz Fest, Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce executive director Gerogia Koch said the decision to dissolve the group and continue a chamber-run jazz event was not about money. The yearly summer event was started in an effort to attract foot traffic to downtown Glen Ellyn businesses by creating a garden oasis along Main Street featuring performances by acclaimed jazz musicians. But in May, the chamber announced it would continue its own event without the College of DuPage partners and White Space Design following a statement from the college's director of the McAninch Arts Center that stated, "The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce has informed us of its intent to create a new event with an …

COD attorneys are trying to keep village officials from testifying during county zoning hearings. Today's court hearing was continued, and village officials might testify at tonight's county zoning hearing.
Village of Glen Ellyn officials can continue to voice their opinions at county hearings, or at least for now. Today the two parties met before Judge Hollis Webster after College of DuPage attorneys filed a motion last week asking Webster to "enforce" the mediation agreement in which the village passed regulatory control of the campus on to the county. Since relinquishing the right to regulate the community college, COD attorneys believe village officials' testimony violates the "spirit" of the agreement, and would like village officials to remain silent during these hearings. Webster did not render a decision Monday but will meet with the two parties again on Wednesday, May 30 at 11 a.m. to further discuss the issue. In court Monday, COD …
