East District Candidate Appointed Interim Councilman

Thor Saline will serve as an interim at-large councilman until the April 9 election.

Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk on Monday appointed Thor Saline, an unopposed City Council candidate in the city's East District, to be the interim councilman in the currently vacant at-large seat.  W. Thoreson “Thor” Saline announced in November he is running for the East District seat to replace longtime Councilman Tom Mouhelis who decided not to seek re-election after 12 years in office.  He'll fill State Rep. and former Councilwoman Jeanne Ives' at-large seat after she resigned to allow time for an election of the seat in November before taking her seat in the 42nd state representative district. Former Councilman and mayoral candidate John Prendiville is running for the at-large seat in the April election. Frank Garcia, a former candidate who…

District 200 Passes Jefferson Referendum

District 200 school board approves referendum for new Jefferson preschool building.

It will be up to Wheaton taxpayers to decide whether they want to pay an extra $19 to $51 a year to rebuild a preschool that hasn't seen an update in over 50 years. The District 200 school board on Wednesday voted 6-1 to put a referendum question on the spring election ballot, proposing to issue $17.6 million in bonds to rebuild Jefferson Early Childhood Center. The question reads: Shall the Board of Education of Community Unit School District Number 200, DuPage County, Illinois, build and equip a new early childhood center to replace the existing Jefferson Early Childhood Center, improve the site thereof and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $17,600,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof? The board last month …

You have to sell your house because of a $ 3 a month increase in taxes? Wow, that is a tight budget. Gas went up at least that much a week.   more ›

District 200 Board to Vote on Jefferson Referendum

The District 200 Board of Education tonight will decide on a ballot question related to plans to rebuild Jefferson Early Childhood Center.

The District 200 Board of Education tonight will vote on a referendum question asking taxpayers to support an increase to pay for a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center. The board last month reviewed two revised and less expensive concepts for a new school to replace the 1958 structure that currently houses students at 130 N. Hazelton Ave. The $17.6 million, 59,000-square-foot concept is less expensive than the originally proposed $29 million and $18.3 million projects, and eliminates plans for district administrative offices and the additional parking they would require.  There are plenty of ways to keep up with Wheaton news: The board agreed last month that it wants to issue bonds for the entire project, which would result in up to $51 …

The current CUSD 200 Board of Education demonstrated it is a poor steward of our tax dollars. Only one Board member appears accountable to the taxpayers who elected him (Mr. Gambaiani). This Board mismanaged the old Hubble property, wasted tax money for ousted Superintendents and other misdeeds. They should not be trusted with additional tax dollars during the worst recession in 80 years. Please …   more ›

District 200 Officials Want $18M Referendum to Rebuild Jefferson

District 200 board members agree they want to use bonds to rebuild Jefferson Early Childhood Center, adding $16 to $42 to taxpayers' bills. The board will vote on a final referendum question in January.

District 200 Board of Education members agreed Wednesday they want to put a referendum on the spring ballot asking voters if they'd support the use of bonds to fund the entire Jefferson Early Childhood Center project. The project, estimated to cost up to $18.3 million, would mean increased tax payments of $16 to $42, bond counsel Bob Lewis told board members Wednesday.  After community forums and a survey on the district’s plan to rebuild Jefferson, district staff and Legat architects revised a $29 million concept combining the school and district administrative offices to address residents’ concerned. Patrick Brosnan of Legat Architects presented two new designs Wednesday that would cost about $18.3 million. (Look for Patch story on new …

Is there any data showing that children who participate in school district provided preschool do any better than those who go to park district or private preschool, or even those who are educated at home? We know that CUSD200 pays the staff about three times what the Wheaton Park district pays theirs. Also, in another article we learned that the current Jefferson school holds 289 students and the…   more ›
