Wheaton-Based Organization Aids Refugees, Immigrants

Immigrant DuPage County residents, many refugees from war-torn or troubled parts of the world, are getting desperately needed resources and assistance from the Wheaton-based organization World Relief DuPage and the Wheaton People's Resource Center, the Suburban Life reports.

“A lot of people don’t realize... many people think that immigrants in the state are in Chicago. Really, 56 percent live in the Chicago suburbs, not in the city," Emily Grey, the executive director of World Relief DuPage, told the paper.

According to the paper, several of the immigrants have stories like that of Wheaton resident Nar Thapa, originally of Bhutan, who lived with his family for 18 years as a refugee in Nepal and now hopes to learn enough English through World Relief programs to take courses as a mechanic and translate his Christian poetry.

“People didn’t treat me badly as a refugee; they all tried to help me,” Thapa told the paper. “They knew that immigrants have a bad time sometimes and need help.”
