Wheaton Residents Sign Names to New Mural

The mural is expected to be completed in time for an Oct. 6 dedication.

Wheaton residents visited the in-progress Pearls of the Universe mural on the Essencia Yoga building at 1026 College Ave. on Sunday to add their names to a painting celebrating diversity and the immigrant journey, the Daily Herald reports

According to the paper, residents could sign their name for free, and for a $50 donation have it incorporated into the mural; a second chance to sign will be available at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.

“This mural is about people, so it seemed like a good idea to have real people be a part of it," muralist R. J. Ogren told the paper. "I'm so glad people have been coming out today to sign their names."

The mural features international landmarks and diverse peoples showing the span of mankind joined together. According to the Chicago Tribune, the mural costs about $6,000, with about $2,500 coming from donations and the rest from Wheaton's Community Relations and Fine Arts budgets. It will be highly visible to commuters, the Tribune notes.
