I want my blonde hair blonder!  Why is it that when I leave the salon, my hair looks yellow?  Why can’t I seem to achieve the platinum highlights that I keep asking for?!!!

Dear Alexis,

I’m sorry that you’re feeling frustrated with your hair color!  It’s always disappointing when we expect one result, but end up with something completely different.  The only way to achieve a highlight that is cooler in tone is to have the correct level of lift before the foils are taken down.  Too often because the colorist is trying to stay on time, they end up taking the foils out before they’re ready, leaving them too yellow to ever achieve the kind of tone like my model Meggan who’s featured above.  After the colorist takes the foils out too early, they may try to apply a toner thinking that this will help them get to where they intended to go.  Wrong!  The highlight should look like the inside of a banana peel BEFORE it’s taken off if you want it to end up and STAY the cool, pale blonde you desire.  It may seem crazy, but before an assistant comes to take my foils down, I always ask if they look like the inside of a banana peel!  Then and only then will a toner or glaze give it that icy sparkle we’re looking for!  I let them know that I would rather wait until it reaches the level I’m looking for, even if it means having to dry my own hair.  Knowledge is power!! I hope this helps you, Alexis.  Soon you’ll be rockin’ the blonde you’ve always wanted!!!
