Go for Baroque

We’re in a time where everyone knows everything but nobody knows anything. In the case of Red Priest, performing this Saturday, January 25 on the Wheaton College Artist Series, some might say they don’t know what Baroque music is, but they’re sure they wouldn’t like it. Some will say they haven’t heard of Red Priest. Others will just retire to their home and not brave the elements to find out. Yet, what better way to protest the cold winter days but to embrace the warmth of live music with neighbors and friends?

Red Priest, by the way, is a Baroque quartet known for their fresh interpretations of music like the Vivaldi Seasons.  The quartet is actually named for Vivaldi, the red [haired] priest who wrote so many wonderful choral and instrumental pieces. But you really haven’t heard Seasons like Red Priest will play it. People listen to Red Priest with the eyes as well as their ears. And theirs is a performance filled with brave cadenzas, brilliant ornamentation and bright colors all the way through. Red Priest’s performances are well reasoned and they have critical acclaim to show for it. One reviews states, “Nothing short of electrifying…combined a supremely accomplished level of musicianship with an almost superhuman energy and a sense of showmanship in a concert that will stand as one of the season’s best.” (Denver Post)

Saturday, January 25, 7:30 PM will be an evening full of musical surprises and you’ll be glad you didn’t stay home to watch reality TV. I’ll see you at the concerts!
