What We Do at People's Resource Center

Another installment of a day in the life of People's Resource Center

On Aug. 1, families began arriving at at 6:30 a.m. By the time our Clothes Closet opened at 8:30 a.m., 30 families were ensconced in the lobby, waiting for their turn to choose new or gently-used backpacks and gym shoes so their children wouldn’t have to start school without.

The backpacks and shoes had been donated by the community and we were confident we had a two-week supply. What we found instead was that during the first 8:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Clothes Closet shift, we distributed everything we had.  If you think poverty is not an issue in DuPage County, think again.

A client, Sara, who has “done everything through us”, is going to Sudan thanks to Edie Crews, our Social Services Coordinator. Sara is a current ESL student and has also passed her citizenship and G.E.D. tests by studying with a tutor at PRC. But when it was time to book a flight to her homeland and fill out the appropriate papers, she was stumped and turned to Edie for assistance. They worked together on all her travel plans and got her ready to go. She’s now on her way and thanks PRC and Edie for all the help they’ve given her.

Our next Dine Away Hunger event celebrates its 10th anniversary in Wheaton on August 15. On that day, 18 local restaurants will generously donate 10 percent of their sales to the PRC food pantry. In the past 10 years, Dine Away Hunger has raised over $57,000 in Wheaton alone, thanks to all our restaurants and supporters. Go out to eat, and you’ll get a delicious meal and fight hunger at the same time!

A PRC client just sent her Literacy tutor a donation for PRC. We are grateful for her generosity, her originality and want to say ‘thanks’!

Since 1975, People’s Resource Center has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County.  With a team of over 1,500 volunteers, we offer nutritious food and other basic necessities like clothes and rent assistance for people facing tough times.  And we connect people with resources—education and tutoring, jobs, technology, art, a caring community—to create a future of hope and opportunity for all.
