Volunteer, Dine Out to Help Food Pantry at People's Resource Center

What's Happening at People's Resource Center

Our volunteer coordinator Lisa Doyle came across this note on one of People’s Resource Center’s volunteer applications:

“Both my husband and I were recently laid off from our jobs and came to PRC to utilize the food pantry last week. At the time we felt very humbled, but left feeling grateful. Everyone we encountered treated us with dignity and respect. That said so much for the way PRC is operated.

"I want to continue to work in some capacity to assist others in need of assistance.”

More than 1,500 people volunteer at our Wheaton and Westmont locations and at classes throughout DuPage. If you’d like to join them, visit the PRC website, fill out a volunteer application and Lisa will call you back. It’s that easy!

Dine Away Hunger celebrates its 10th anniversary in Wheaton on Wednesday, Aug. 15. For the past 10 years, restaurants in Wheaton have generously donated 10 percent of their sales on a certain day to the Food Pantry. Cadence Health, a longtime partner, matches all money raised up to $10,000. Thanks to our restaurants and supporters, Dine Away Hunger Wheaton has raised over $57,000 to help feed your hungry neighbors.

Join us on Wednesday—you’ll have a great meal and help fight hunger at the same time! You can check for a list of the 18 participating restaurants on the PRC website.

Teta came to PRC in 2002. She had come from Africa where she was a birth attendant and community health facilitator. With the help of our job assistance program, she found work as a caregiver. Since then, she has worked her way up the medical ladder by first becoming a patient transporter at a hospital. She then passed a test to become a Certified Nurse Assistant. Now she’s a Patient Care Tech and enjoys her work. By taking her first step at PRC, she learned job hunting skills like writing a resume and going on an interview and used them to reach her goals.

Since 1975, People’s Resource Center has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County.  With a team of over 1,500 volunteers, we offer nutritious food and other basic necessities like clothes and rent assistance for people facing tough times.  And we connect people with resources—education and tutoring, jobs, technology, art, a caring community—to create a future of hope and opportunity for all.
