Wheaton's Rooney Named to 2012 Olympic Volleyball Team

Sean Rooney of Wheaton will make his second Olympic appearance as he represents USA Volleybal in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

USA Volleyball announced its nominations for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team Friday for the 2012 Summer Games in London, including Wheaton native Sean Rooney, according to USA Volleyball.

The outside hitter will return to the Games after his first trip to the games, when the U.S. Men won the gold medal in Beijing in 2008.

Rooney, 29, graduated from in 2001, when he was the Illinois State Player of the Year after leading his team to a state championship.

His play in 2011 was limited as he struggled with a shoulder injury. He has played pro volleyball in South Korea, Italy and Russia, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The U.S. Men qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games by winning the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament on May 7-12 in Long Beach, CA, according to USA Volleyball.

The U.S. Men have won the gold medal in 1984, ’88 and 2008 and won bronze in 1992.

They will begin play in the London Olympic Games on July 29 against Serbia.
