Wheaton South Loses to West Aurora 2-1 in Overtime

Boys varsity soccer team falls in overtime, finishing DVC play at 1-6.

AURORA—Sometimes, the ball does not bounce the right way.

The Wheaton Warrenville South boys soccer team learned that the hard way during a 2-1 overtime loss to West Aurora on a non-goal.

During the second overtime period, West Aurora senior forward Cesar Carcia crossed over to senior midfielders Josue Martinez and Mike Vazques in the Tigers' box.

Wheaton South sophomore goalkeeper Tim Reinders dove to stop Vazques' shot, but one of Reinders' teammates accidentally kicked the ball into the Tigers' goal, resulting in a non-goal and a loss.

The Blackhawks (16-5-1, 4-3 DuPage Valley Conference) are 5-1 in overtime this year.

The Tigers (7-11-3, 1-6 DVC) had many opportunities throughout the match, including overtime. Junior midfielder Dan Burns received a cross pass from sophomore midfielder Max Carey and slide kicked the ball.

However, Burns stuck the ball off the side of his foot, allowing Blackhawks senior goalkeeper Abel Diaz to deflect it.

"We had a set play for the corner to the near post," Burns said. "Max played a great ball in and I missed."

With the ball still in West Aurora's territory, the Tigers had another throw in, but junior defender Joe Holz missed the goal by about a yard left.

The match began well for Wheaton South as Tomazin blasted a free kick over Diaz's reach for a 1-0 edge.

"I was really trying to get the ball to the back post so we could get one of our players to run under it," Tomazin said. "Fortunately, I got lucky that the keeper didn't get a hand on it."

Martinez answered for the Blackhawks in the second half, booting a 20-yard tally past Reinders' reach.

"Wheaton Warrenville South outplayed us in the first half," West Aurora coach Joe Sustersic said. "Second half, we got some momentum after Josue Martinez's goal. After that, we got some confidence back in."

Tigers coach Guy Callipari was happy his defense stepped up, but his offense needs work.

"We needed more flank play and more support by our outside midfielders, and that didn't happen," Callipari said. "We needed to be able to get one-on-one with (Martinez) and pull him to the side so we could slide balls in, and we almost got that done on a couple occasions in overtime."

Senior defender Dan Tomazin said the Blackhawks were playing Martinez deep as a sweeper, hindering the Tigers' forwards play.

Wheaton South could not continue its recent DVC success after beating Glenbard East 1-0 Monday for its first league victory on senior midfielder Thomas Schubert's first goal of the season.

The regular season wraps up against Wheaton Academy (13-5-1, 7-1 Suburban Christian) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home. This match will be for the Wheaton Cup.

"With Wheaton Academy, you have a lot of pride at stake between both programs," Callipari said. "The Wheaton Cup at stake as well is something that carries a little weight during the year. It is also preparing for the playoffs."

Thursday's match is also significant because senior forward George Doran will return after missing six matches through injury.

"Not only is he great on the field, but he is a huge morale booster for the whole team," senior midfielder Nate Fuster said. "He has a great personality. It would just be great to have him back on the field with us."

Doran suffered a concussion and perforated eardrum during Sept. 28's West Chicago match. He is second in goals scored with six.
