Wheaton South Girls Golf Fourth at Providence Catholic

Returning Class AA state qualifier Renee Solberg was third overall to help the Wheaton Warrenville South girls golf team to fourth place at Providence Catholic. St. Francis and Wheaton North were fifth and seventh in the Silver Division.

Broken Arrow Golf Course presents players with innumerable obstacles at its par-72 layout in Lockport.

As if there are not enough hazards on the course, the greens are as treacherous as the pin placements were daunting Saturday afternoon at the Providence Catholic Invitational.

Wheaton Warrenville South senior leader Emily Johnson can certify its many challenges.

The Tigers’ senior leader averaged nearly a two-putt per hole at the 26-school girls golf tournament, firing her highest score in more than two seasons.

“The pin placements were rough,” said Johnson, who finished with a score of 90 on the sunny but windy afternoon to place second among WW South players. “Some of the greens didn’t break as much as others.”

In the Gold Division of the tournament, WW South fired a collective 363 to place fourth among schools with notable girls golfing legacy. Hinsdale Central (348) turned back Marian Catholic and Lyons Township to win the tournament behind the medalist-firing 73 authored by junior Rosanna Lederhausen.

St. Francis and Wheaton North were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the Silver Division.

“It’s a very, very tough course,” said St. Francis coach Matt Walsh, whose squad was led by the 92 fired by senior anchor Meg Van Thornout. “There’s a lot of water and trouble if you’re not in the fairway.”

Renee Solbert, who like Johnson has two Class AA state tournament appearances under her belt, had the low performance among the 15 local competitors.

The junior had a solid finish to fire one of two 81s on the day; Solberg was deemed third overall after dropping the scorecard playoff to Marian Central senior Sylvie Brick.

“It was an up and down kind of day,” Solberg said after nine-hole composite nines of 42 and 39. “Overall, I’m pleased with my score. I was striking the ball decent. I fell victim to some of (the tricky pin placements). They were sucker pins.”

With her 3-over finish on her inward nine, Johnson enabled the Tigers to hold off Lincoln-Way East by four shots for third place as a team.

Prized freshman Kelly Anderson had a 94 for WW South, which had its team score rounded out by the 98 from Camille Granberry.

St. Francis is hoping to make a move in the postseason after being reclassified as a Class A school in girls golf.

“We’re hosting a regional at St. Andrews,” Walsh said. “Our goal is to win the regional. We have three more weeks to work on it.”

None of the five Wheaton North players were able to break triple digits as Hillary Barry led the Falcons with a 102.
