Wheaton High School Soccer Seasons End With Individual Awards on Both Sides of Town

Three Wheaton North, six Wheaton Warrenville South soccer players awarded at annual Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association banquet.

The 2012 boys soccer season in Wheaton came to a close with the receipt of multiple awards by local players at the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) banquet held in November, including a total of four scholar athletes named to Chicago Fire Academic Teams for the play, academic standing, and work in support of the soccer community.

The Wheaton North Falcons fought through a difficult year, finishing at No. 7 in the DuPage Valley Conference (DVC), but celebrated an emphatic win in the first round of the regionals which should give the 14 returning varsity players something to build on in 2013.

Three senior Falcons received the following awards from the coaches:

  • Central defender Brooks Joy was named to the Chicago Fire First Team All State All Academic squad, as well as receiving DVC All Conference and IHSSCA All Sectional honors. 
  • Outside midfielder Shelton Thompson IV joined Joy on the Fire First Team All State All Academic Team.
  • Central midfielder Isaac Roberts received DVC Conference Honorable Mention.

At Wheaton Warrenville South, the young Tigers had a more successful 2012 season, finishing at No. 3 in the DVC, with a repeat as Wheaton Cup champions and a win at the Naperville North Regional.

Six Tigers were acknowledged for their efforts during the course of the season:

  • Senior midfielder and team scoring leader Max Carey was named DVC All Conference, All Sectional, and in addition received all area and all state accolades from several newspapers.  
  • Senior defender Tom Kerby was named to the Chicago Fire First Team All State All Academic squad, as well as receiving DVC All Conference and All Sectional honors.  
  • Junior central defender Joe Spera was named DVC All Conference and Honorable Mention All Sectional.  
  • Senior keeper Tim Reinders was named to the Fire Second Team All State All Academic team, and was named Honorable Mention All Conference. Reinders closes out his career third on the Tiger all time saves list, with 291.  
  • Senior forward Yusuf Yusuf received honorable mention awards from the DVC coaches.
  • Sophomore midfielder Patrick Nielsen also received honorable mention awards from the DVC coaches.
