The Tigers Take a Share of the DVC Crown from the Falcons

Wheaton Warrenville South defeats Wheaton North to tie for first in the DVC

This year’s Wheaton bragging rights for football are going to stay with Wheaton Warrenville South.

In a much anticipated showdown, the Tigers triumphed over the Falcons, 27-13, to steal the DuPage Valley Conference championship. Both teams finished 6-1 in conference and tied for first place.

Both teams’ defenses held firm in the first quarter, as neither offense could put together a sustained drive. In the battle of field position that ensued, the Tigers managed to pin the Falcons deep in their own territory. After a 20 yard Tiger punt return to the Falcon’s 20, the Tigers closed in on the first score of the game. Dan Vitale runs of 10 yards and five yards brought the ball to the Falcon five yard line as the first quarter ended. Vitale finished off the scoring drive with a one yard run early in the second quarter, and the Tigers were ahead 7-0.

The Tigers extended their lead to 13-0 in the second quarter as Vitale scored again. The Tiger score seemed to have inspired the Falcons, who game back on their next series to find the end zone themselves with Patrick Sharp scoring the TD after a 29 yard run.

It appeared the teams would go into the locker room at half with the Tigers up 13-6, but an interception and touchdown run back by Wheaton Warrenville’s Daniel Roadman increased the lead to 20-6 with just 47 seconds left in the half.
