A New Year, A New You!

Setting and conquering your goals for 2013!

As I sat at home last night doing a little work, my wife turned on the show, The Biggest Loser. As I watched, I started to get more and more intrigued. Here you have individuals who are severely or morbidly obese, some with severe health problems, some with psychological or self conscious issues, who are given the opportunity of a lifetime to be coached, educated and helped in improving their overall health, well being, and physical and mental presence.

Some contestants meet the challenge head on and give it everything they got, some do what they can, accept somethings and reject others, and some believe it or not quit because they are not mentally prepared for the advice and challenge.

So my topic for the week is achieving goals and dreams that you have for the year 2013. There is no better time then the present to start making your dreams become your reality. Whether it is to lose 20 pounds, make more money at your job, find a new profession, become a better father, or run a marathon, anything is possible when you but your mind a little effort into it.

The following are some steps that I use and some things that were presented to me through various outlets such as coaches, seminars, and books. These have helped me accomplish many things in my life and I hope you will find them beneficial as well.

  • Be sure to write everything down on paper.
  • List all the exciting things that you accomplished in the year 2012
  • List all the things that you wish to accomplish during the year 2013. This list is your 2013 Goals
  • Put a time line on when you want to achieve these goals. An example would be lose 20 pounds and 4 dress sizes by June 30, 2013.
  • Develop an action plan. This is the most important step in achieving your goals. Without an action plan your goals are just dreams, wishes, and words. The action plan details what you are going to do and how you are going to do it. An example would be: for the month of January I am going to walk 3 times a week for at least an hour; February I will cut out or reduce sugar and processed foods in my diet; March I am going to hire a personal trainer to help me work out; April I am going to work out 5 days a week, Weights/Exercise class -  Mon., Wed., Sat., Cardio - Tues., Thurs.; May I will compete in a 5K run; June I will complete the action plan, achieve my goals, and fit into that new dress.
  • Have someone hold you accountable. Partner up with a friend, coworker, or family member. Its always easier to have someone their to help you through things and give you that extra bit of support or motivation.
  • Make it fun. Develop games or challenges with one another.  Compete against one another in a friendly manner. Reward yourself for achieving certain goals
  • Say Affirmations. Tell yourself that you are achieving your goals. Affirm to yourself that you will conquer your goals and dream.
  • Create a bulletin board that has your goals written out. Put up pictures of your goals. Put up pictures of something that inspires you or motivates you, whether it is a material possession or a loved one.
  • Visualize your goals and visualize yourself achieving these goals.
  • Stay positive

Many people have dreams or wishes at the beginning of the new year, but life catches up and things get in the way and those hopes and goals fade into the background, just like a few of the contestants on The Biggest Loser. Don't let that happen to you. Set goals, set a time line, and develop an action plan to make the rest of your life, the best of your life.
