Wheaton-Warrenville Speech Team Wins State Championship

Wheaton Warrenville South High School’s 96-member speech team placed in seven of the total 15 events to earn 32 points and win the state championship.

The Illinois High School Association State Speech Final was held Feb. 21 to 22 in Peoria. This is the 9th State Championship for the team with the last win being in 2002.

The following students placed at state: Tyler Miksanek, 4th Place in Extemporaneous Speaking and a 3rd Place in Impromptu Speaking; Hannah Howell, 3rd Place – Original Poetry; Marilyn Zubak, State Runner-up – Informative Speaking; Grace McGuan, State Runner-up – Poetry Reading; Tommy Ottolin and Katie Weeks, State Runner-up – Humorous Duet Acting; and Brooke Sommerfeld, state champion in Radio Speaking.  

The Speech Team coaches are Dave DeMarzo, Marco Benassi, Julie Eakins, Roberta James, Kay Kehoe, Dan Ottolin and Shana Williams.
