Wheaton Warrenville South to Host 6th Annual Choral Classic

Wheaton Warrenville South will host 25 schools from five states at the sixth annual Choral Classic Invitational March 8-9.

Wheaton Warrenville South High School this weekend will host its sixth annual Choral Classic Invitational, where 25 middle and high schools from five states will travel to Wheaton to compete in show choir and vocal solo performances. 

Approximately 1,500 students are scheduled to appear on stage during the two-day competition and more than 4,000 people are expected to attend, making it one of the highest attended singular performance events in the history of the school, according to a District 200 news release.

On Friday night, the middle school division will compete, kicking off at 5:30 p.m. with an exhibition performance by Edison Middle School’s Electric Youth. Competition performances from other school show choirs will follow, with a 6:20 p.m. performance by Hubble Middle School’s Expressions.

Rounding out the evening at 8:25 p.m., the two-time national champion WWS Classics will perform an exhibition, followed by an awards ceremony at 8:50 p.m.

The Classics have taken home three Grand Champion titles in their 2012-13 competition season from the Mt. Zion Midwest Invitational, the Urbandale Show Choir Invitational and the John Hersey Chicagoland Showcase.

Saturday’s high school competition begins at 8:30 a.m. with performances by unisex show choirs, mixed ensembles, and soloists. A performance at 5:05 p.m. by WWS all-female group Esprit caps off the day’s events and immediately precedes the 5:45 p.m. preliminary awards ceremony. 

Later Saturday evening, the Finals Competition will feature the six high school groups who have been awarded the highest scores from the judges for their earlier preliminary performances. All six groups will perform starting at 7:30 p.m.  The Classics will finish the evening with an exhibition performance at 10:30 p.m., and the final awards will be given at 11 p.m., including the announcement of this year’s Grand Champion.
