School Report Card: 10 District 200 Schools Make Adequate Yearly Progress

District 200, like most other districts in the state, did not make Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind.

The Illinois State Board of Education on Tuesday reviewed statewide 2012 assessment data, showing 82 percent of Illinois school districts failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The number grew over last year, but only slightly as AYP benchmarks were frozen, allowing Illinois schools ot meet last year's performance expectations, according to a press release from the ISBE. Only 11 Illinois high schools made AYP in 2012.

Despite failing to make AYP, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South high schools are among the top schools in the state, according to a Chicago Sun-Times ranking.

"We are truly in a transition period in education as we move away from the punitive and one-size-fits-all nature of No Child Left Behind," State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch said in a statement. "We are hopeful that this is the last year we report in AYP results and can instead offer data that paints a fuller picture of each student's and school's learning experience."

According to the District 200 profile, the district is ahead of the statewide curve, with 87 percent of the district meeting and/or exceeding standards on all standardized tests. Seventy-seven percent of schools statewide meet and/or exceed standards.

Of the 19 schools in District 200, 10 made AYP, including:

  • Sandburg Elementary School
  • Johnson Elementary School
  • Emerson Elementary School
  • Lincoln Elementary School
  • Longfellow Elementary School
  • Lowell Elementary School
  • Madison Elementary School
  • Pleasant Hill Elementary School
  • Whittier Elementary School,
  • Wiesbrook Elementary School

Though Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South high schools did not make AYP, they were not identified for school improvement according to the AYP specifications of NCLB.

North is on Academic Watch Status for the sixth year, with 75 percent of students meeting and exceeding standards on the PSAE, ahead of the state at 51 percent, according to its profile.

South is on Academic Watch Status for the seventh year, and was also not identified as a school needing improvement, with 68 percent meeting and exceeding standards in the PSAE assessment, ahead of the state at 51 percent.

According to the ISBE statement, schools can miss AYP because of the performance of a sub-group, even when the school meets benchmarks or makes progress over the previous year.
