A schoolyard garden positively addresses six of the eight contributing factors to obesity identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gardening helps children learn about making better food choices, encourage physical activity, reduce sedentary behavior, and lead to healthier environments at home, at school, and in the community.

At the same time, gardens provide a positive reason for school communities to come together, with parents, teachers, administrators, volunteers and children working together to green our communities.
