Franklin Students Have a "Heart" for Those Battling Breast Cancer

Four 8th grade students at Franklin Middle School are doing their part to help people battling cancer. Maddie Weeden, Mollie Freeman, Breanna Westburg and Jessica Hayes, all 8th grade students at Franklin, have put together a week-long fundraiser at their school to benefit people battling breast cancer. So why would the week of February 13th be good for a fundraiser? According to the girls, with Valentine’s Day being Tuesday, this is a week to show people you care about them.

All week long, the girls are selling hearts and ribbons for $1 before and after school and during lunch periods. During the two girls basketball games this week, the four students have organized a bake sale. In fact, during Thursday’s basketball game, the Franklin Bulldog team will wear pink jerseys to show support. A representative from the American Cancer Society will be present at the game to accept the donations the girls have worked hard to raise.

According to Franklin Assistant Principal Joe Kish, “These four young women have really demonstrated strong leadership skills and needed very little help from staff. Anytime students decide to do something like this shows their social awareness and willingness to step up and make a change in the lives of others. We are very proud of their efforts.”

How can you help? Come to the Franklin girls’ basketball game on Thursday, February 15th at Franklin at 4:30 p.m. and buy some baked goods.
