District 200 Wants Community Involved in Planning

Community engagement process to start in early 2014.

Wheaton Warrenville School District 200 is preparing to launch what it calls an “extensive community engagement” process intended to have residents lead the district in planning its future.

In a release emailed to residents on Friday, the district invites all residents to participate in the process, which it said was triggered by board action on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, to contract with Unicom for the work at a cost of $49,500.

The process will include a series of community workshops and other events that will provide residents who participate the chance to learn about aspects of the district that include:

  • The district is seeking residents’ views about the “opportunities and challenges” the district faces, according to the release. The district says it intends to use the district it gathers in the workshops into a summary report to the Board of Education in the summer of 2014.

“It is vitally important for our entire community to participate,” Board Secretary Brad Paulsen, who also is a member of the Community Engagement Committee, said in the release. “Only with diverse and informed voices can we develop an effective plan for our District’s future.”

The release states that in the coming weeks, a group of residents and district staffers will work to set times and places for the workshops.

The first communitywide workshop is scheduled tentatively in mid-January. The district is asking residents who want to attend to sign up to be on the community engagement contact list by emailing communications@cusd200.org or by calling 630-682-2469.

“I look forward to these being very productive sessions where our District 200 residents can have meaningful dialogue with their neighbors regarding District issues, challenges and opportunities,” said Board Vice President Jim Vroman, also a Community Engagement Committee member. “This will be a wonderful opportunity for anyone in our community interested in having an impact on the future of our school district.”
