District 200 Seats New Board Members

District 200 adds new board members, chooses members to serve as president, vice president and secretary.

The Wheaton Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education on Tuesday seated its new board members, Jim Mathieson and Brad Paulsen, who will replace outgoing members Andy Johnson and Ken Knicker.

Of the nine candidates in the 2013 election, voters elected incumbents Joann Coghill and Barbara Intihar, and candidates Brad Paulsen and Jim Mathieson to serve on the board.

The board elected Intihar to serve as the board president, replacing Rosemary Swanson, who has served as president since her re-election in 2011. Jim Vroman will serve as vice president and Brad Paulsen will serve as secretary of the board, according to a news release from District 200.

Intihar said on election night her main focus as a board member will continue to be academics in the district.

"That's our business and everything else supports that, and that's what should drive our district," she said.

She said she thinks there will be challenges ahead with funding, making sure the common core curriculum is implemented well and that the district is taking care of students' needs from a social and emotional learning standpoint. She added she has ideas for what the district could do if they had the money, such as offering foreign languages at an earlier age and doing more in preparation for college and career counseling.
