D200 Bracing for Impact of State Funding Cuts

Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 is expected to lose $1.3 million under Gov. Quinn's cuts for the next school year.

Staff of Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit District 200 are preparing for Illinois state budget cuts that will lower state funding per student for the third straight year, costing the District $1.3 million per year, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to the paper, D200 has aready increased class sizes and made cuts in programs for reading, special-education and gifted students, and will likely have to trim further. State spending is down to $5,452 per student from $6,119 in 2010, the paper said.

"The state continues to whittle away at funding, which was lacking from the start, and it puts more and more pressure on the local community to pay for the education of our students," Bill Farley, assistant superintendent of business operations for D200, told the paper. "We've made the necessary cuts, but it's still difficult for us... At this point, it's almost a joke."
