Briar Glen Students Raise Funds Through Penny Wars for Autism Society of Illinois

The Briar Glen Student Council will present a check to the Autism Society of Illinois on Thursday.

The following information comes from a Community Consolidated School District 89 press release.

In support of National Autism Awareness Month, students from District 89’s Briar Glen Elementary School raised money through a “Penny War” at the school from April 21 to May 2.

This week on May 8, members of the school’s Student Council will present the Autism Society of Illinois with a check.

Principal Mitch Dubinsky said the students had a lot of fun with the Penny War while raising money for a very important cause.

“The students and their families were very generous during the two-week Penny War, and we ultimately exceeded our fundraising expectations for the Autism Awareness event,” Dubinsky said. “All grade level classrooms participated and the fundraiser was very successful.”

The object of the game was for classrooms to collect as many pennies as possible during the two week contest, with one point earned for each penny deposited in a classroom’s container.

Students and teachers could put currency other than pennies into other classroom containers, with silver coins and dollar bills reducing points for a classroom at an amount equal to the value of the coin or bill.

“It actually got pretty competitive during the final week of the contest,” said Dubinsky.
