Fitness Center Seeks to Open in Downtown Wheaton

City officials will consider an application to allow a health club to open at 124 N. Main St. in downtown Wheaton.

Wheaton's planning and zoning board next week will hold a public hearing to consider an application for a special use permit to allow a health club to open at 124 N. Main St. in downtown Wheaton.

Strand Fitness, LLC, 268 Sheffield Lane in Glen Ellyn, has submitted the application, and would occupy the main floor and lower level units of the building.

The space, formerly the JB Winterberry antique shop, is now available for rent with three units and a lower level space.

According to Wheaton's Zoning Ordinance, health clubs are not a permitted use on the main floor of a building in the C-2 retail core business district, where 124 N. Main St. is located. Health clubs are, however, allowed on any other floor, and would require a special use permit to open on the main level.

The planning and zoning board will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at City Hall, 303 Wesley St., Wheaton.
