Movoto’s list starts with No. 1 Northbrook, No. 2 Highland Park, No. 3 Glenview, Park Ridge, Elmhurst, Wheaton, Arlington Heights, Downers Grove, Palatine and No. 10 Mount Prospect.

The blog looked at such amenities as shopping, dining and entertainment, among others, the cost of living in relation to the state’s average; crime, also in relation to the state’s average; education, looking specifically at high school graduation rates; employment, which encompassed both income and jobless rates compared against the state average; and finally how home values compared to state averages.

The blog praises No. 5 Elmhurst as a “cultural mini-mecca,” pointing specifically to the Theatre Historical Society of America and the Elmhurst Art Museum. The post also praises the city as the birthplace of Keebler cookies.

Wheaton’s standing, the blog states, gets its start simply by being listed in Money magazine’s 25 highest-earning communities in the nation. The magazine listed Wheaton’s average annual income at $86,000. But the blog also touts Wheaton’s high school graduations rate, which is 13 percent higher than the state average; that the city is home to three colleges, as well as a public library considered among the nation’s best.
